Some tense moments in the 200 block of West 12th Street in Bloomsburg Thursday night. It was around 8:15... police getting a call about a man threatening to harm himself... as well as officers since he had weapons in the home. Bloomsburg police responded. The unidentified man was eventually taken into custody... and transported to the Bloomsburg Hospital for evaluation.
We're in challenging times... so says State Senator John Gordner of Berwick. The Senate and the House have been trying to put together a budget that will get the signature of Governor Corbett. The 2012 – 2013 proposal stands at an estimated $28 – billion... but Senator Gordner says there may not be enough money to cover it.
Good news for the Danville Area School District. The Federal Emergency Management Agency... and the state of Pennsylvania is giving the district a $3.1 - million grant. It's designed to either repair or replace buildings and equipment damaged by the floods produced by Tropical Storm Lee last September. A FEMA news release says more than $1- million of the grant has been allocated to alleviate future flooding to the school.
A new website is now up and running to help homeowners who need to insure their property against flooding... such as what we experience in Columbia and Montour Counties last fall. www.pafloodmaps.com contains new digital flood insurance rate maps established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Theresa Elliott with the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development says the site serves as a clearinghouse for flood insurance information.
Massive improvements are coming to the Fitness Center at the Bloomsburg YMCA. The “Y's” Roger Brown says starting Saturday the center will be closed for a week... while workout equipment is reupholstered and repainted. But, Brown says the biggest improvement members will feel is the installation of a new heating and air conditioning system... replacing a couple of units which originally came with the building back in the mid 90's.
Pocono / Tourism
One of the biggest sporting events in the Northeast US takes place this weekend in our own backyard. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond for Sunday's 400 mile race. Otto Kurecian of the Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau says the economic impact of tourism from the race weekend is becoming less noticeable.
Berwick Pet & Toy Parade
They came in all shapes and sizes... the marchers and their prized possessions in last night's Berwick Pet & Toy Parade. The line of march was led by Berwick Police cruiser.... followed by a military color guard who got a round of applause from folks sitting on the curb of Market Street. Included in the parade... animals of every size and description... including a live alligator... and a couple of snakes. The event was capped by a line of apparatus from the Berwick Fire Department. Last night's Pet & Toy parade was sponsored by the Berwick Elks Lodge.
Another week... another purse snatching in Hazleton. This time... police are looking for a man who stole a purse from a woman on Bennett Court... between Cranberry and Juniper Streets. But the robber didn't have an easy time... with the woman trying to hold on to her purse until the strap finally gave way. It's the sixth purse – snatching in Hazleton over the past couple of weeks.
A 21 – year old Hazleton man has been busted by police for allegedly selling drugs. Hazleton police taking Jeffrey Castillo into custody for allegedly selling heroin during the past couple of months. A search warrant executed on Castillo's home turned up some marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says three cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in Luzerne County. West Nile is a virus carried by mosquitoes.... and it's arriving earlier than usual due to a soggy fall and a warm winter. Earlier this year... the DEP sprayed the banks of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County to keep the West Nile Virus in check.
The Northumberland County and the federal government has come through with money for two municipalities thanks to the Community Development Block Grant program. Marion Heights getting $129,000... while Kulpmont received a check for $94,000. The money is earmarked to improve storm water systems. Kulpmont will use the money near Scott and 8th streets... while Marion Heights will focus on an area of Rosenthal Street where the area is owned by the borough and Mount Carmel Township.
Southern Columbia Softball
The best season in the history of Southern Columbia softball continues. On Thursday, the Tigers defeated Bristol 6 - 1 in a Class A state quarterfinal game at Lebanon Valley College. On Monday Southern Columbia will take on Greenwood in the semifinals. Greenwood beat Northeast Bradford 3-1 on Thursday to advance into the quarterfinal game. Monday's Southern Columbia - Greenwood game will be played at Hutchinson Field at Bloomsburg University at 2 PM.
NBA / Eastern Conference
Miami's LeBron James had one of his best performances of his NBA career Thursday night... pumping in 45 points... leading the Heat to a 98 – 79 victory over the Boston Celtics. The win tied the Eastern Conference finals at three games each. The conference championship will be decided Saturday night in Miami. The winner to meet the Oklahoma City Thunder in the finals on Tuesday.
More of the same for the Philadelphia Phillies. The Los Angeles Dodgers taking four straight games.
Thursday's final was 8 to 3. Philly has now lost six straight games... but they hope to get a fresh start when they play the American League's Baltimore Orioles Friday night.
