Unit 1 at PPL's Steam Electric station in Salem Township... north of Berwick... back on line Thursday morning. The unit started producing power overnight after a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage which began in late March. Meantime... PPL says inspectors found no turbine blade cracks on Unit two... which was shut down as a precautionary measure last month... after cracks were found on the blades of Unit 1.
With “Mullgate” behind Bloomsburg government... there will be a new face at Town Hall come Monday morning. Bill Lowthart becomes Town Administrator... after spending the last half – dozen years with SEDA – COG in Lewisburg. Lowthart replaces Ronald Mull who was Administrator for less than two months earlier this year.... then leaving under questionable circumstances.
Jury selection has concluded in the child molestation case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. The 68 – year old Sandusky accused of molesting ten boys over a 20 year period. Court observers say the jury processes went faster than expected. Testimony in the Sandusky trial begins Monday morning at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
Back Branch Road
If you use Back Branch Road between Whites Church and Millertown Road in Mt. Pleasant Township you're going to have to find an alternate route. PennDOT plan to close the road so crews can begin a stream bank stabilization project along Fishing Creek near a major curve where the creek is eroding the ground. The project has been planned since last September's flooding... but was placed on the back burner until the erosion problem threatened the road.
Members of Elks Lodge 436 in Bloomsburg will salute the Stars and Stripes this Sunday as they celebrate Flag Day. Lodge Exalted Ruler Mary Ann Dickerson says Flag Day is as important now as it was in the past. Sunday's Flag Day ceremony gets underway at 1 O'clock at the Elks Lodge on Old Berwick Road.
What a difference eight months makes. Last September... the band shell at Bloomsburg Town Park under eight feet of Susquehanna River water. Wednesday night... a pretty good turnout for the Shoreliners kicking off the 2012 Summer Concert Series. Town Park Improvement Association President Chuck Wagner telling us... the series consists of nine events through the 55th annual Ice Cream and Cake Festival on August 9th. Next Wednesday... the Danville Community Band led by Ted McCafferty.
Who would want to steal two religious statues from a Hazleton Church. That's what police want to know. The statues of Saint Theresa and the Virgin Mary were taken sometime late last month from Most Precious Blood Church in the 100 block of East Fourth Street. The thieves went to some trouble to take the statues... since they were cemented to a base. If you have information about the theft... call Hazleton Police.
Mohegan Sun Hotel
Officials at Mohegan Sun Casino at Pocono Downs... near Wilkes – Barre... have filed for a building permit with Plains Township. They want to build a 7 story... 238 room hotel with a convention center. Casino officials hope to break ground for the estimated $40 – million complex this year.
The investigation into that accident last month between Hazleton’s police chief and a motorcyclists has been turned over to Pennsylvania State Police. A marked SUV driven by Chief Frank D'andrea collided with a motorcycle driven by 80 – year old Walter Bloss of Hazleton. Troopers will try and determine who had the green light at that busy downtown intersection.
Tremont Bank Robber
A bank robber is on the loose. Police in neighboring Schuylkill County are looking for a man who robbed the Miners Bank in Tremont Wednesday. He strolled into the bank... asked for money and was last seen walking across Main Street where he got into a car. Now... authorities are looking at video from a surveillance camera to see if they know the bank bandit.
A Pottsville woman is headed for prison for embezzling more than $200,000 from the Rape and Victims Assistance Center of Schuylkill County. 57 – year old Mary Beth Semerod was sentenced to two years in prison for pilfering the money. Now... she has to pay it back. Semerod is the former executive director of the agency.... and court records show she didn't have any financial or gambling problems. She will report to prison in August.

The Southern Columbia girls softball team plays Bristol this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Lebanon Valley College in a Class A state quarterfinal. Southern Columbia will be counting on star pitcher Mallory Tomaschik who has earned the praise of head coach Al Cihocki. Southern Columbia takes a 21-3 record into today's state quarterfinal.
