The state house is back in Harrisburg Monday to take up the issue of Pennsylvania's 2012 – 2013 proposed budget. On the agenda is funding for higher education... such as state – run universities. Appearing on a recent edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... State Representative David Millard of Millville said no matter how much money the state contributed... that didn't prevent tuition increases. Money earmarked for higher education remains in a state of flux... but it's believed it will remain at current levels.
Police have issued an all points bulletin after a 79 – year old Ralpho Township man was robbed of an estimated $2,500 over the weekend. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Mondays edition 79 – year old Irving Snyder was relieved of his money after a man and a woman came to his home... saying they had car trouble. When they stepped inside the door... the man shoved a sharp object in Snyder's ribs and took the money... while the woman grabbed some painkiller medication. Both fled... and remain on the loose.
Tourism dollars apparently do pay off. And visitors to the state... as well as to the region means dollars in local cash registers. Otto Kurecian of the Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau says Pennsylvania has always been successful in it's marketing efforts, but that may change. The state has allocated to spend $4 – million this fiscal year... but under the 2012 – 2013 proposed spending plan... Governor Corbett has cut a million dollars off the tourism spending line.
Fishermen are concerned about the health of the Susquehanna River. Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Executive Director John Arway wants the Department of Environmental Protection to list the Susquehanna River as a "high-priority impaired and threatened water..." There has been concern about the heath of the river... ever since lesions have been found on fish caught in the Susquehanna.
The search is on in the Hazleton area for a man who left the Minsec halfway house over the weekend. 38 – year old Alfonso Quinones was discovered missing on Sunday.... after tripping the emergency exit door alarm. Quinones was at the pre – release facility for a 2009 guilty plea on a drug charge in Monroe County.
Parole has been denied for convicted killer Joann Curley. She was convicted 20 years ago for poisoning her husband Robert Curley by slipping a potion into his drink. Following a five year investigation... Curley was convicted and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison. It believed Curley will again seek parole a year from now.
State Police are expected to wrap up their investigation of a one vehicle crash over the weekend south of Hazleton. Authorities say 28 – year old John Lupcho of Weston died after his pick up truck went off the Nuremburg Bypass in Black Creek Township. The truck striking two trees... rolling down an embankment and ending up on it's roof.
The child sex abuse trial of former Penn State defensive football coordinator Jerry Sandusky begins Tuesday at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte. Sandusky is accused of abusing at least 10 boys over the last two decades. Prosecutors say he met the boys through his charity for neglected children.
The Southern Columbia softball team faces a real challenge in their first round state playoff game Monday afternoon. The Tigers face defending state champion Minersville at Blue Mountain High School. The game starts at 2 o'clock.
