Southern Suit

The Southern Columbia Area School District Board of Education... as well as high school principal James Becker... are facing a federal lawsuit filed by a former student. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16 is reporting.. the student who filed the suit was sexually assaulted by two athletes... both later convicted of sex crimes. However, the suit says, the district circled the wagon when the teenaged girl was allegedly harassed... with the district allowing the two boys to play football and basketball.

 

David Millard / Budget

State Representative David Millard of Millville says he believes a budget will be in place by the middle of the month. Appearing on the Thursday edition of the WHLM Morning Buzz... Rep. Millard telling Joe and Norm the house won't re-write the Senate's version of Governor Corbett's proposed spending plan. Instead, it will head for a conference committee for an up or down vote... then, if approved, be sent to Governor Corbett for his signature.

 

Hostess Brands

Hostess Brands, incorporated may be on the verge of closing 13 of it's Pennsylvania facilities by the end of the summer. Included in that is a plant in Berwick which employes 9 people. A notice has already been filed with the Department of Labor and Industry that could forecast the layoffs of nearly 700 employees across the state. Earlier this year... Hostess entered chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to get it's financial house in order.

 

Schuylkill Haven Fire

Investigators are expected at the scene this morning following a four – alarm fire in Schuylkill Haven Thursday night. No one knows what touched off a fire at the Schuylkill Gun Works. Volunteer firemen were had a difficult time battling the blaze due to exploding containers of gunpowder. The blaze destroyed the building that housed the gun shop... and up to a have dozen adjoining building were received smoke damage.

 

Musto Trial

The corruption trial of former state senator Ray Musto was to have gotten underway next week in Luzerne County Court. But that won't happen now. Instead... the trial has been postponed until October. Attorneys for the 83 – year old Musto says he's not healthy enough to stand trial. Musto is fighting a liver disease... and attorney's say any complications could be fatal.

 

Lemmond

A former State Senator who served Luzerne County has died. 83 – year old Charles Lemmond of Dallas died this week. In addition to serving 20 – years as a state senator in Harrisburg... he was a Luzerne Count Judge... and a district attorney.

 

Gun Charges

A Wilkes – Barre man remains in the Luzerne County Jail... charged with making terroristic threats. Police capturing Robert Deleo moments after he allegedly threatened people with a loaded gun in the 300 block of Hanover Village. Deleo was stopped... with cops finding a loaded gun in his car.

 

Bank Robbery

Still no suspect in Tuesday's Snyder County bank robbery. Police say a man strolled into the MCS Bank in McClure... pulled a handgun on a teller and demanded money. The bandit got his cash and fled. Luckily... no one was injured in that stick up in McClure.

 

In WHLM Sports

High School Baseball

In high school baseball Thursday, in the District 4 Class AA semifinals played at Bowman Field in Williamsport... South Williamsport defeated Danville 3 to 2... and Loyalsock got by Central Columbia 5 to 3. In the District 2 Class AAA championship game at Scranton High School... North Pocono blanked Berwick 10 to nothing.

 

Girls Softball

In girls softball, in the District 4 Class A championship game at Elm Park in Williamsport.. Northeast Bradford just getting by Southern Columbia 2 to 1.

 

NBA

In the NBA Western Conference final series Thursday night Oklahoma City defeated San Antonio 102 to 82. San Antonio now leads the series two games to one.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies had last night off. They're back at Citizens Bank Park Friday night when they begin a weekend set with the Miami Marlins. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:30. The first pitch is tossed at 7:05 on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280.
