Power has been restored to most of the 2,100 PPL subscribers who lost their juice during the height of Tuesday afternoon's storm. Now... only an estimated two dozen homes and businesses in Bloomsburg and Scott Township are without power according to the utility's website. The storm was associated with a cold front making it's way... west to east... across Pennsylvania.... dropping temperatures in Bloomsburg from an estimated 93 degrees... down to 76 in 45 minutes. The front will bring relief to the region over the next few days lowering temperatures... and reducing humidity.
PennDOT crews worked throughout the day Tuesday to preform emergency road repairs on Route 42... south of Catawissa... as well as Route 487... north of McIntyre... and near Ashton Hollow Road. The roads either washed away or undermined by flash flooding. PennDOT's Guy Hubler said he was surprised by the damage. Hubler says he hopes all the work can be wrapped up Wednesday.
Two former Potts Grove volunteer firefighters waived their rights to preliminary hearings Tuesday... and now head to court to face arson charges. 19 – year old Zane Snyder of Milton and 35 – year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg are accused of setting fires in Montour and Northumberland counties... as well as calling in false alarms in Union County. The pair is currently locked up in the Montour County Jail in Danville on bail of $250,000 each.
Expect to see more aggressive traffic enforcement in Bloomsburg... now that the town police department has received a grant from the PA Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project. Appearing on the WHLM Morning Buzz... Sgt. Roger Van Loan says there is a problems with aggressive drivers and pedestrians. Sgt. Van Loan says officers will target the Main Street area of Route 11... as well as Lightstreet Road... where there have been problems between pedestrians and drivers.
It appears Luzerne County could end their budget year an estimated 4 – million dollars in the hole. That assessment from County Manager Robert Lawton... who told council recently that despite a 2% property tax increase... there is a shortfall in the county's future. Lawton says he'll have a proposal in time to present to the council in July aimed at reducing expenses.
A man found guilty earlier this year in the stabbing death of a Hazleton resident will spend the rest of his life in prison. Rodolfo Hiraldo – Perez was convicted in the stabbing death of Vladimir Ruiz outside a Hazleton bar in early 2011. His sentence was handed down Tuesday. A second man... Angel Sanchez has pleaded to third degree murder in the death of Ruiz... and is awaiting sentencing.
Wilkes - Barre Robbery
An 18 – year old teenager is in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility after he was charged in connection with an armed robbery over the weekend. Police say Antwoine Tinson is accused of robbing a woman at her home on Carlisle Street. Bail is set at $25,000. Meantime... a 17 – year old juvenile is also charged in connection with the case.
You and I are paying less at the gas pumps these days... thanks to a drop of crude oil prices. The latest Triple A Fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular across northeastern Pennsylvania is averaging $3.52 a gallon. That's down a penny from the weekend... and off five cents from a week ago.
Overall... a gallon of gas has dropped 31 – cents from a month ago.
Looking for a large building as an investment. The Sunbury Armory building is on the block. The 18,000 square foot building was used by the Pennsylvania National Guard for years until moving to a new location near Mausdale... in Montour County. 9-and-a-half acres of land is also included with the sale of the building on Armory Road.
