Tuesday Afternoon Storms
A rough Tuesday afternoon for many of us... as a line of thundershowers moved through the area.The storm downed trees and power lines.... knocking out electricity to an estimated 2000 PPL customers... many of them along the commercial district on Route 11 from Bloomsburg... north into Scott Township. Dispatchers calling out Fire Police to take up positions at intersections... making sure drivers got through the uncontrolled intersections. The storm was associated with a cold front making it's way... west to east... across the state... dropping temperatures in Bloomsburg from an estimated 93 degrees... down to 76 in a 45 minute period of time. The front will bring relief to the region over the next few days lowering temperatures... and reducing humidity.
It's difficult to get where you needed to go on Tuesday... south of Catawissa.
A flash flood Sunday night caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage to homes... businesses and roads. But PennDOT crews have been working around the clock to clear and repair the highways.... such as State Route 42 and 487. The agency's Guy Hubler said he's getting all the support he needs to get the roadways back in shape. It's hoped that the repair worker on 42... as well as 487 on the county's south side can be wrapped up late Wednesday.Memorial Day
You couldn't have want better weather across the region Monday... especially in Mifflinville for the 124th annual Memorial Day parade. As hundreds of people lined 3rd Street... as well as Market to view the parade and hear the Catawissa Military Band. The route lead marchers to the Mifflinville Cemetery where Columbia County Commissioner Rich Ridgway delivered the keynote address... asking those at the ceremonies to never forget the veterans and the sacrifices they made to ensure our freedom. Other services were held at Elan Memorial Park... as well as Berwick, Danville and Mocanaqua.
Back Branch Road in Mt. Pleasant Township could be shut down... if water from Fishing Creek erodes an embankment which supports the roadway on a sharp curve. That word from a PennDOT County Manager. During a tour at the start of the weekend with DEP Secretary Michael Krancer... Shawn Hill says additional erosion due to high water could collapse the two lane road. Over the years... Fishing Creek has altered it course. Where the creek now flows was... at one time... the site of a Girl Scout camp.
It appears the Danville area has a million dollar lottery winner in it's midst. The Sunbury Daily Item is reporting that a single mother of three... who works at the Danville State Hospital has won a million dollar lottery jackpot. The unidentified woman stopping by the Leighow Food Shop... with the clerk checking two tickets... one of them a million dollar winner. No word as to who the woman is... or when she'll take her ticket to Harrisburg for confirmation of the win.
Sunbury Police are investigating a double stabbing which took place early Monday morning at an apartment complex. Authorities say four adults and a juvenile were arrested after they alleged stabbed two people. A teenager was treated and released at a hospital.... while an adult is listed in serious condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Take Home Cars
Luzerne County Manager Robert Lawton says he plans to come up with rules and regulations dealing with county – owned vehicles used by employee's to drive to and from work. The issue has been up in the air for some time... now there is word that the county has failed to report the use of those take home vehicles to the IRS. The agency says an employer provided car is a taxable personal benefit.
No word when Lawton will unveil the new rules.
The police chief who head's up the Wright Township police department in Luzerne County... will soon take on a new challenge. Chief Joe Jacob will retire at the end of the week after 20 – years on the job... and will become the deputy superintendent of the Pennsylvania Capitol Police Department in Harrisburg. He'll supervise an estimated 100 officers who patrol the capitol grounds.
A Luzerne County man is expected back in the area this week after he was arrested in Philadelphia. 22 – year old George Lee Barnes is charged with murder in the death of 26 – year old Daron Trollinger at the Eagle Ridge Apartment Complex in Edwardsville. Police say Barnes shot and killed Trollinger over a drug deal.
A Plymouth man is in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility after he allegedly threatened his ex - girlfriend with a handgun. Police say 22 – year old Andrew Drury faces a long list of charges following the Sunday morning incident.
The Philadelphia Phillies opened a three game set with the New York Mets Monday in the Big Apple... and at the end of nine innings... the Phils came out on top 8 to 4. The Phils got a lot of help from Ty Wigginton who tallied six RBI's... with a single... a double and a three run homer. Cole Hamels went eight innings for the win. The Phils and Mets meet again Tuesday night.
