Sections of two traffic routes in Franklin and Catawissa townships, Columbia County, are closed this morning following flash flooding Sunday evening. Due to the flash flooding, Route 487 has been damaged from Route 3003 (Ashton Hollow Road) to Catawissa. The road is buckled, undermined or the surface is peeled off in several areas. A detour will be set up in Northumberland County to warn motorists who want to travel through, but the road will be open to Knoebels Amusement Resort and up to Ashton Hollow Road for local traffic. The detour for through traffic will be Route 54 to Danville then Route 11 north to Bloomsburg and then Route 42 to Catawissa. Traffic will not be able to use Route 42 because it is closed at the Catawissa Creek Bridge. The second road closure is Route 42 from Mcintyre Road to Mountain Road due to debris and the roadway surface being severely buckled just before Mountain Road, which is located by the Catawissa Creek Bridge. A message board will be placed in Aristes to warn motorists until a formal detour is in place. PennDOT crews are attempting to open both roads. There were three bridges in these areas that were overtopped. Bridge inspection teams will be checking them out Monday for any possible damage from the flood waters.
