Berwick Road Reconstruction
For the past year or so... Berwick has been a traffic nightmare... as crews install new water and sewer lines... leaving the roads a mess. Starting next month... Barletta Construction with try to right the wrongs by reconstructing Front and Second... as well as some side streets. During a meeting in Berwick on Wednesday, Barletta's Andrew Kwarcinski said the biggest hurdle will be the weekend of June 22nd when the Berwick – Nescopeck bridge will be shut down for two days. That's the same weekend of the Bassmasters Fishing Tournament at Test Track Park. The entire project is expected to last through September. Repaving work begins June 9th.
There were employment opportunities to be had during Wednesday's Job Fair at the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn. Area businesses were showing what they had to offer to prospective employees. One was the Benton Foundry... and the company's Lou Sappe' said he talked to a lot of folks... many of whom have been out of work for some time. Sappe' most of the folks he chatted with had a background in construction or been in a factory environment previously. But whatever the case there are jobs depending on work history and the level of skill a applicant brings to the table.
Bloomsburg Fire Scare
Bloomsburg Volunteer firemen were out last night... specifically around 8:30 in the 300 block of Catherine Street. Fire Chief Bob Rupp says the home's tenant spotted smoke coming from the chimney... and they thought that was unusual... so they called the fire department. Firemen checked out the basement of the two – story, half double home and found nothing out of the ordinary. Early in the evening... firemen were called to 500 Honeysuckle Court after a burned piece of french bread triggered the building's alarm.
That high school football coach indicted by the feds for allegedly producing kiddie porn has pleaded not guilty in Scranton Federal Court. Joesph Ostrowski... the former coach at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre... was then hustled out of the courtroom and back to jail. If convicted... Ostrowski could spend more than 15 years in prison.
Another day... another purse snatching in Hazleton. This time an elderly woman sitting on a bench near Mine and Church Streets was ripped off by a man who swiped her purse Wednesday. It's the fifth incident of this type in the Hazleton area over the past couple of weeks. If you have information about the series of purse snatchings... give Hazleton Police a call.
The search continues for an Edwardsville man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting a week ago. George Lee Barnes is wanted by police stemming from a shooting outside an apartment complex. He was last seen a little more than a week ago... but since then... he's remained on the lamb. Barnes is wanted in the shooting death of Daron Trollinger outside the Eagle Ridge Apartments.
Northumberland will soon let bids for the construction of a new sewage treatment plant. The Sewer Authority voting to spend $9 – million to replace the current plant which has been around since the late 1960's. The new, updated plant will be built at the current plant's location on Water Street. An option considered and rejected was hooking up to the Sunbury system. Still to be decided... how to pay for the new plant.
That paving work in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Mifflinville should be wrapped up late Thursday. Crews have been paving from the Mifflinville interchange... moving to the east at a slow pace and that has shut down lanes and tied up traffic. The project should be wrapped by 7 PM.
High School Softball
In the waning days of the 2011 – 2012 school year... there are still some softball games to be played. Thursday afternoon... in the District 4 class single A playoffs.... Cowanesque Valley is at Southern Columbia. The District 4 Class double A playoff's find Bloomsburg at Towanda... and Central at Warrior Run... while the District 2 Class triple A playoffs finds Pittston at Berwick. All games get underway at 4:30 this afternoon.
The Philadelphia 76er's and the Boston Celtics are headed into game 7 in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Sixers defeating the Celts Wednesday night 82 to 75. The win tied the teams at three games apiece. The two teams meet for Game 7 Saturday night in Boston.
Cole Hamels tossed eight shutout innings Wednesday night as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Washington Nationals 4 to 1 in their series finale. The score card shows Hamels allowed four hits, three walks and struck out eight to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Phil's now travel to St. Louis to meet the Cardinals tonight in the first game of a weekend series.
