Murder Charge

A 38 – year old Benton man faces a preliminary hearing later this month after he was charged in the shooting death of his girlfriend. Abe Kline is accused of the shooting death of 35 – year old Jocelyn Romano at their Coles Creek Mill Road home in Sugarloaf Township last week. Kline then turning the weapon on himself... but survived and is now at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. State police tell us Kline was arraigned in his room... and charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault

 

Flood Buyout

It's been a long time in coming.... the approval of an application to the feds by Bloomsburg for the buyout of 11 flood – damaged properties along the 900 block of West Main Street. Word of the $1.2 - million FEMA dollars earmarked for the buyout was pretty good news for Mayor Dan Knorr. The Mayor says the state will kick in 22 percent of the 1-point-2 million... with the town treasury picking up the remaining three percent. The buyouts should be completed by early fall.

 

Central Columbia Budget

On a vote of 8 to 1... the Central Columbia School District's Board of Education has approved their 29 – million dollar operating budget for the 2012 – 13 school year. Superintendent Harry Mathias says the budget includes the establishment of a new kindergarten program... and nearly a million dollars for the renovation of the district's aging high school. The plan does include a property tax increase... the final numbers depend on the assessed valuation of your home.

 

Pipe Replacement

If you use the Beaver Valley Road to get to or from work... you might have to use a detour. A PennDOT maintenance crew will preform an emergency pipe replacement today along the Beaver Valley Road. Crews will replace two 24 – inch diameter pipes between the intersections with Mountain Shadow Lane and Mountain Road... about a mile west of the Columbia / Luzerne County line. The work should be wrapped by the end of the day.

 

Berwick Meeting

PennDOT and Hazleton – based Barletta Construction will hold a meeting Wednesday afternoon in Berwick dealing with the planned re-construction of Route 11... which includes Front and Second Streets. Both streets are already a mess due to the installation of water and sewer lines... and the new construction would take place after initial work is completed. The meeting begins at 2 O'clock at the Reliance Fire Hall on West Third Street in Berwick.

 

Luzerne County

It appears Luzerne County government could be looking at a 4 – million dollar shortfall this year. During a meeting of the Luzerne County Council on Tuesday... manager Robert Lawton says despite a 2 percent increase in property taxes... that's still not enough. Lawton says he'll take a look at the issue and have specific solutions in hand by the council's July meeting. And that may mean reducing expenses in order to cover the projected deficit.

 

Seat Check

If you're a parent or grandparent... and you transport little one's around in your car with a child safety seat... is it up to par... and more importantly... is it safe. That's the essence of a safety check Saturday... at the Bloomsburg YMCA on 7th Street... conducted by the Bloomsburg Police Department. That safety check to be conducted Saturday starting at 10 AM.

 

Wilkes – Barre Meth Lab

A Wilkes-Barre father and son have been busted for making meth at their Church Street home. 40 – year old Jeff Dayo, Sr... and his 17 – year old son, Jeff Jr... are facing a slew of drug charges after police found the pair cooking meth in the basement. A 16 – year old girl... a runaway from Nanticoke... was not charged. Drug agents in protective suits spent the day dismantling that meth lab in Wilkes-Barre.

 

Wilkes – Barre Arrest

Investigators say they have a man in custody... accused of robbing a Turkey Hill Store in Wilkes-Barre. 22 – year old Damon Millan of Nanticoke is accused of knocking off the story at Carey Avenue and Division Street earlier this week. Millan was found at the Hanover Township home of David Hermanoski... who was also arrested. Discovered in Hermanoski's home... cigarettes... allegedly stolen from the Turkey Hill Store in Wilkes – Barre.

 

Paterno Pension

Joe Paterno earned a state pension of $13.4 - million for his 61-year coaching career at Penn State. The Paterno family... announcing through a spokesman... that Paterno's widow, Sue, will receive an initial payment of $10.1- million by the end of May... with the rest to be paid out over the next two years.

High School Baseball

In high school baseball Tuesday... in the District 4 Class double A playoffs... Danville defeated Towanda 7 to 2... In District 2 Class triple A... Berwick beat West Scranton 8 to 3.

 

High School Softball

In high school softball Tuesday... in the District 3 Class double A playoffs.. Central Columbia blanked Columbia – Montour Vo – Tech 10 to nothing... and Benton downs Sullivan County 16 to 6.

 

NBA Playoffs

Lebron James scored 30 points Tuesday night... as the Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers 115 to 83 in the NBA East semi – finals. The two teams meet again Thursday night.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Try as he might... but without a supporting cast.... Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies took it on the chin Tuesday night. The Phils were defeated by the Washington National's 5 to 2. Halladay and Company giving up ten hits. The final game of the three game series is tonight at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting with the pre-game show at 6:30... with the first pitch at 7:05 on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280.
