Council / Lowthert

A new Bloomsburg Town administrator could be on – board by the middle of June if a contract is worked out. Town Council Monday night... voting to offer Bill Lowthert of SEDA – COG... the job of administrator for $74,000 a year. Mayor Dan Knorr says he's comfortable will Lowthert... and so is the rest of council. If a contract can be worked out... Lowthert would replace former administrator Ron Mull who left after six weeks on the job under questionable circumstances.

 

Grandma Theft

A Bloomsburg man is accused of allegedly bilking his grandmother out of $114,000... converting most of the money to his own use. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition...43 – year old Anthony Morgante of Lightstreet Road appeared in front of District Magistrate Marvin Shrawder Monday. He's facing 78 felony counts... allegedly writing checks after becoming a power of attorney for his grandmother who is confined to a Montour County nursing home. Morgante was hustled off to the Montour County Prison with bail set at a quarter million dollars. He'll face a preliminary hearing next Wednesday.

 

Car Vs. Train

A Milton girl is dead after the car she was riding in slammed into a North Shore Railroad train Monday afternoon. Authorities say 17 – year old Maxine Eschbach of Center Street was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16 – year old driver of the car was rushed to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville in serious condition. Her name has not been released. The accident happened where the tracks cross Center Street. Investigators don't know why the driver failed to stop.

 

AGAPE / Lowe

Seven months after the floods produced by tropical storm Lee made a mess of Columbia County... faith based AGAPE is trying to get lives of flood victims back together again. Organization spokesperson Kathy Lowe says volunteers are standing by to help... especially on weekends. To get a hold of AGAPE in Bloomsburg just call 317 – 2210.

 

Arrest Warrants Issued

Berwick police are looking for two men in connection with an early Friday morning house fire on Summerhill Avenue. Arrest warrants have been issued for 30 – year old Robert Fowler and 21 – year old Perry Harmon. It's believed they were producing meth in the basement of the apartment when something went wrong. The blaze forced eight people from the home.... all having to find other places to live.

 

Nanticoke Fire

A Nanticoke fire is being blamed as suspicious. The blaze broke out around midday Monday on the back porch of a building at 27 and 29 West Union Street. The Nanticoke fire department quickly extinguished the blaze... and damage was minimal. The State police Fire Marshal is being called in to investigate.

 

Police Remembrance

This week we remember police officers who have died in the line of duty. It's part of National Police Week... and Peace officer's Memorial Day. Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says weather you work in a large or small police department... the pressures are the same. Town Council recognizing the Bloomsburg Police Department during last night's meeting.

 

Plymouth Stabbing

A Plymouth woman is in the Luzerne County Prison after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend when he refused to leave her home. Deborah Blackhawk telling police she stabbed her boyfriend in the back. That man has not been identified...

 

Found Guilty

A man from Carbon County will be spending the rest of his life in prison. 37 – year old Ernest Freeby of Lansford was found guilty of murdering his wife in 2010. Edwina Onyango's body was never found.  Freeby says he'll appeal his conviction.

 

Gas Prices

Pump prices these days are just a bit easier on your pocket. The Triple A Fuel Gauge report says self – serve, unleaded gasoline has dropped an estimated 28 cents a gallon the past month... now making the average price across northeast Pennsylvania at $3.76. That's a drop of seven cents over last week.

 

Northumberland County

Northumberland County could end up filing for bankruptcy unless its money woes aren't addressed.  That word contained coming from County Commission Chairman Vinny Clausi. There is a published report that Northumberland County could wind up $2 – million in the hole, but Clausi telling a Sunbury – area newspaper he's developing a 4 – year plan to to fix the problem. Clausi blames the union who represents county employee's for pushing for pay raises which costs the county more than a million dollars a year.

76ers

For the first time since 1982, the Philadelphia 76ers won a playoff game in Boston. Evan Turner scored four points in the final 40 seconds to help the Sixers to an 82-81 win over the Celtics. The Eastern Conference semifinal series is tied at one game each. Game three will be Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

 

NBA

It was in the opening game of the NBA Western Conference semifinals. Russelll Westbrook had 27 points and nine assists, Kevin Durant added 25 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder blasted the weary Los Angles Lakers 119-90 on Monday night.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Joe Blanton went seven strong innings on Monday... as the Philadelphia Phillies downed the visiting Houston Astro's 5 to 1. A highlight of the game... Placido Polanco getting his 2,000th hit. The Phils and Astro's play a Tuesday afternoon matinee at Citizens Bank Park. You can catch all the action starting at 12:30 with the pre – game show... with the first pitch slated for 1:05... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 &  Berwick's 1280.
