Berwick firemen were called out overnight to battle an apartment fire on the Borough's north side. Firemen were called to 244 Summerhill Avenue where first units spotted heavy smoke coming from the multi – family apartment complex. Police rescuing one person from the second floor of the building. Now... the state fire marshal has been called in to determine what started this mornings blaze in the 2 – hundred block of Summerhill Avenue.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused an early Thursday morning fire which extensively damaged a Shamokin apartment complex. The fire forcing 13 people from their apartments in the 300 block of East Sunbury Street. Luckily... no one was injured. Shamokin firemen getting help from Coal Township... as well as a half – dozen other volunteer departments.
Central Columbia Budget
The Central Columbia School District's board of education is expected to adopt it's 2012 – 2013 budget when they meet on the 23rd of the month. Superintendent Harry Mathias says the board has done a pretty good job of taking a look at the budget process in the long term... citing no elimination of programs.
Post Office Collects
Postal carriers who deliver mail in the Bloomsburg area will be looking for something extra Saturday. It's the day they collect food products left by the mailbox for those who are in need. Carriers want to set a record for the area... by collecting 15,000 pounds of product to be turned over to area food banks.
Millard / Budget
The State House now gets a chance to take a look at the Senate's version of Governor Corbett's 2012 – 2013 proposed state budget. The senate... beefing up the proposal by $517 – million. Representative David Millard of Millville says the proposed extra money makes a lot of people happy. During an interview in Rep. Millard's office... he said projected state tax revenues... and the use of a rainy day fund will make up the half billion dollar boost. Whatever there case state legislators want to have the proposed budget on the Governor's desk by June 15th.
A Shenandoah man is headed to prison after pleading guilty in Luzerne County Court in the shooting death of a friend back in 2011 during a Hazleton poker game. 30 – year old Jaboar Stanley pleaded guilty in the death of 20 – year old Emmanuel Felix at a duplex in the 100 block of East Mine Street. The pair had been arguing over poker chips when Stanley pulled his handgun... pointed it at Felix and it went off. Sentencing for Stanley is scheduled for June 19th.
Holy Redeemer Coach
It's no bail for a Wilkes – Barre high school football coach. Earlier this week we told you about the arrest of Joseph Ostrowski on kiddie porn charges. Ostrowski was the head football coach at Holy Redeemer High School. Now... the 30 – year old coach has given up his right to a preliminary hearing. That means... Ostrowski will remain in the Luzerne County Prison until a second hearing is held later this month.
