Fire investigators say the cause of a house fire in Mifflinville Wednesday morning was electrical in nature. Fire Chief Dave Mausteller says the fire was confined to a bedroom of the second floor of the home occupied by David Bratten and Katrina Mertz... as well as their two kids. The first assistant chief on the scene found smoke billowing out of the second floor. Other help came from Berwick, Espy and Lime Ridge... as well as Berwick Area Ambulance. Bratten and Mertz are being helped by the American Red Cross.
Hit and Run
Bloomsburg Police are investigating a Tuesday night hit and run. Police say it took place in the Town Park area when a pick-up truck ran into the newly – installed fencing and drove onto newly planted grass. Police say they're looking for a red Chevrolet Avalanche with a gray hood... and it may have damage to the front bumper and grill area... as well as the passenger side of the truck. It is a big weekend on the Bloomsburg University campus this weekend. Nearly 1,300 undergraduate Students... and 238 graduate students will receive degrees during commencement ceremonies. BU spokesperson Bonnie Martin says the speaker for the undergraduate ceremonies is '81 BU grad David Williams... now president and CEO of the Make – A – Wish Foundation.
Whatever disputes remain between prosecutors and Jerry Sandusky’s defense lawyers about turning over evidence before trial will be among the topics of a court hearing at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte on Wednesday. The other major topic expected to be addressed before Judge John Cleland during Wednesday afternoon’s hearing is the use of defense subpoenas, as school districts and government agencies have asked him to throw them out.
Senate / Budget
The Senate Appropriations Committee has advanced a state budget bill with a lot of bipartisan support. Committee chairman... Republican Jake Corman of near – by Centre County... says the amended bill would spend $27.6 billion... compared to the $27.1 billion proposed by Governor Corbett earlier this year. The reason for the $500 – million bump... according to Senator Corman... is the improved state revenue picture since the governor's budget address.
The head football coach for Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes – Barre has been arraigned on kiddie porn charges at the federal courthouse in Scranton. Joseph Ostrowski was arrested Monday and accused of making child pornography. Following the arraignment... he was hustled off to the Luzerne County Jail. Ostrowski had been the football coach at Holy Redeemer since June of last year. He's been suspended from the job by the Scranton Diocese of the Catholic Church.
The State Department of Environmental Protection is checking into last week's apparent blowout of a natural gas pipe line installation. The DEP says it's near Leonard's Creek... in the Kunkle section of Dallas Township. The incident happened when contractors were boring under wetlands... when some of the mud used in the process blew out into the creek. Now... the DEP wants to know what chemicals were in the mud.
The Luzerne County Council's contract impasse with its detectives is headed into binding arbitration. That... after the council voted 6 to 5 against a new contract on Tuesday. The council has spent the last several months... behind closed doors... trying to hammer out an agreement to the detectives who make an average of nearly $80,000 a year.
This is the last week for extended unemployment benefits in Pennsylvania due to the state's declining jobless rate. But with fewer people receiving benefits, efforts to combat fraud are not letting up. Jim Tillman, of the Department of Labor and Industry, says a major chunk of fraud is detected by checking a database of newly hired people in the state to see if any match those on unemployment compensation claims.
Bloomsburg University softball players Sam Pientack and Kate Paine have been named to the 2012 Daktronics Atlantic Region Softball team. Pientack was a first team selection while Paine was named to the second team. The duo led the Huskies to a record of 35-16, taking second in the PSAC Championships and earning a bid to the NCAA regional's.
The Philadelphia Flyers are out... while the New Jersey Devils are in. The Devils defeating the Flyers Tuesday night 3 to 1. The victory sends the Devils into the conference championship round for the first time since 2003.
The Chicago Bulls aren't quite finished after all. They defeated the Philadelphia 76er's Tuesday night. The final... 77 to 69... avoiding a first round playoff exit. The Bulls have a chance to even the series when the teams meet Thursday night in Philadelphia.
