Bank Robbery Arrest

A 55 – year old Harvey's Lake man will be headed for the Luzerne County Jail... after he gets out of the hospital... after he was arrested on a bank robbery charge. Police say Girard Kalinay is accused of robbing a PNC Bank along Main Street in Mocanaqua at the start of the weekend. He was captured after crashing his motorcycle on Mocanaqua – Wapwallopen Road in Conyngham Township... not far from the bank. Cops finding a weapon and money at the crash scene.

 

Pet & Toy Parade

The 46th annual edition of the Bloomsburg Kiwanis Pet and Toy Parade is scheduled Wednesday night. Kiwanis president Mary Ann Kreisher says the parade forms behind the Columbia County Courthouse at 5:30... and an hour later... the line of march moves south on Market Street to the Bloomsburg Town Park.

 

Wheelchair Engineers

The Wheelchair Engineers will be open this afternoon at their location at the Columbia Mall in Buckhorn. It consists of several handicapped accessible O - gauge and American Flyer model railroad layouts. Earl Wagner and Bob Bomboy have worked hard to make the Wheelchair Engineer's program a huge success... not only folks who are handicapped... but for people who like toy trains.

 

Verdict

A West Hazleton man will spend the rest of his life in prison... after he was convicted for the murder of a woman back in 2010. It took a jury seven hours to convict Benjamin Westbrooks at the start of the weekend in the shooting death of Alicia Weaver. Her body was found in a wooded area of Foster Township... and investigators say Weaver owed Westbrooks money.

 

Shale Law

Pennsylvania's new Marcellus Shale impact law may only be three months old.. but there may be changes on the horizon. State House Democratic Whip Mike Hanna of near – by Clinton County says his caucus is introducing six bills to address... what he calls... a half dozen failures with the law.

 

Freeland YMCA

The Freeland YMCA continues to rebuild... with the latest effort to rebuild its 81 – year old building through a capitol campaign project. The donations will also be earmarked to add programs... as well as help families with membership fees. Right now... an estimated $125,000 has been raised... with a quarter – million dollars for its goal.

 

DUI School

Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke will have a lot of police officers on campus this week. The reason... a week – long training programing dealing with alcohol and driving. Officers from around the region have signed up for the program. The program is conducted in association with the Luzerne County District Attorney... the PA DUI Association and the College.

 

Cardiology Unit

Geisinger Medical Center has taken the wraps of its new 34,000 square foot interventional cardiology suit. The unit is located in the Hospital for Advanced Medicine on the GMC campus. The facility consolidates cardiac treatment at Geisinger.

 

PennDOT Work

PennDOT says crews will be busy... starting Monday... in Mifflin Township. Crews will begin paving Smith Hollow Road. The work will require the red – arrow detour to be in effect... ... using Hetlerville Road into Mifflinville and Route 339. The work will be completed by the end of the week.

BU Lacrosse

The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team won the PSAC Championship on Saturday with a 15-9 win over Mercyhurst in the in final at Lock Haven. It was the Huskies 4th PSAC title- their first since 2003.

 

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Lock Haven Saturday in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. The Huskies finished the season with a record of 35-16.

 

NBA Playoffs

In the NBA playoffs yesterday, the Philadelphia 76er's took a three games to one lead in their series against the Chicago Bulls. The Sixer's beat the Bulls 89-82.

 

NHL Playoffs

In the National Hockey League Playoffs, the Philadelphia Flyers now trail the New Jersey Devils three games to one. The Flyers lost to the Devils Sunday 4-2.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Cole Hamels fanned eight men over eight innings on Sunday to give the Phillies victory in the finale with the Washington Nationals. The final was 9 to 3. The Phil's are back at home Monday night as they begin a three game series with the New York Mets.
