BU Power Outage
Classes and most events on the Bloomsburg University campus were canceled Thursday after a power outage brought things to a standstill. Some students were trapped in elevators... and had to be rescued by the fire department. The juice started flowing around 4 O'clock after PPL crews replaced a transmission line in the Welch Circle area on the upper campus.
Day of Prayer
Thursday was was a day to step back for a few moments... and catch your breath during the National Day of Prayer. A consortium of Bloomsburg – area churches holding an outdoor service at midday near the fountain at the square. The service consisted of a contemporary Christian band... and pastors from the Bloomsburg Ministerial Association.
Market St Accident
Two people were transported to the Bloomsburg Hospital late yesterday afternoon following a two vehicle crash at 4th and Market Streets. Bloomsburg Police Officer Mike Fosse telling WHLM News one vehicle slammed into the rear of a car waiting to turn from Market to Fourth.
Barletta / AVP Equipment
US Representative Lou Barletta of Hazleton says the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton International Airport in line to receive a quarter – million dollar grant. The money... channeled through the Federal Aviation Administration... is earmarked for the purchase of a new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle. The grant's money is also be be used for the replacement of protective gear. AVP is the major airport in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Luzerne County Alcohol Highway Safety Program will hold a week – long training program for local police officers starting Monday. It will take place at the Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke. Officers from around the region have signed up. The program is conducted with the Luzerne County District Attorney... the PA DUI Association and the College.
Geisinger Medical Center in Danville will open it's doors Friday today to it's new intervention cardiology suite. The unit is located in the Hospital for Advanced Medicine. A hospital spokesperson says the new 34,000 square foot cardiac catheterization suite consolidates cardiac treatment at Geisinger.
Geisinger Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Glenn Steele Jr., has been named among Modern Healthcare magazine’s 50 Most Influential Physician Executives in Healthcare for the fourth consecutive year. Since Dr. Steele joined Geisinger in 2001, the health system has been successful in recruiting many highly experienced physicians and researchers... updating and expanding medical facilities to bring Geisinger care closer to patients throughout central and northeast Pennsylvania and expanding the health system’s electronic health record system.
PennDOT says it's crews will be busy Monday in Mifflin Township. Weather permitting... crews will begin paving Smith Hollow Road. The work will be using the red – arrow detour... using Hetlerville Road into Mifflinville and Route 339. The work will be completed by the end of next week.
Columbia County veterans will have help coming their way Friday. State Representative David Millard of Millville says the Department of Veterans Affairs' mobile vets center will be set up Friday morning in the parking lot of TPC Power Share at Tenny Street and Route 11. A representative will be on hand to talk about a variety of veterans affairs services.
The Shamokin Area School Board will consider cutting its athletic budget by 28 %. The board's athletic committee this week recommended the school board approve cutting nearly $157,000 from the sports department's $550,000 budget. The proposed cuts include eliminating 13 coaching positions, reducing coaching salaries across the board by 35% and requiring district athletes to purchase their own uniforms.
Milton School District officials are in a financial bind. They're working at reducing a $736,000 deficit for the 2012-2013 school year. Since March 18th the district has been able to cut over $137,000 dollars from the deficit which then stood at $873,000. The work continues as the June 30th deadline for school districts to have a budget in place approaches.

BU Women's Lacrosse
The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team plays West Chester Friday in the PSAC semifinals. The game starts at 4 o'clock at Lock Haven.
The Bloomsburg University softball team plays West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Two Regional Friday afternoon at 1 O'clock. The tournament is at California University.
In game three Thursday night of a best of seven National Hockey League eastern conference semi – final series... the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4 to 3 with an overtime goal. The Devils now take a 2 to 1 lead series.
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton delivered Thursday... throwing his first shutout since June of 2007... and defeating the Atlanta Braves 4 to nothing. Blanton allowing three hits and striking out six. The Phil's now move on to D-C where they'll play the Washington National... opening up a three game series Friday night.
