FEMA Buyouts

FEMA is slowly coming through with the buyouts of flood – ravaged homes across central and northeast Pennsylvania. The agency says Columbia County property owners are on the list to be bought out. FEMA says it will spend $4 – million on 46 properties... which will then be demolished. The agency says the buyout money comes from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

 

Nat'l Day of Prayer

A celebration of the National Day of Prayer is on Thursday's calendar. Since 1988... the first Thursday of May is designated to take time out of our busy schedule to give thanks... so says Pastor Eric Miller of the Bloomsburg Christian Church says it's a time to reflect on life. Thursday's local National Day of Prayer event gets underway at 12 noon on Market Square in downtown Bloomsburg.

 

Lupas Indicted

A federal indictment handed down Tuesday alleges Luzerne County attorney Anthony Lupas allegedly stole money from clients... saying he was placing the cash in a trust fund. Federal authorities say those trust funds never existed... with Lupas using the money to run a “ponzi” scheme. The indictment says in one instance... Lupas allegedly took a quarter – million dollars from one person alone. Attorney Ernie Preate... representing some of those allegedly bilked... says it will give investigators more time to probe the missing money.

 

Berwick Fire Folo

Authorities say that fire in a Green Street apartment earlier this week in Berwick is accidental. Our media partner... NewsWatch 16... is reporting the fire was electrical in nature... and not drug related. The man who lives there... in the 600 block of Green Street... was badly burned and remains in at the Lehigh Valley Medical Center. His name has not been released.

 

Schuylkill Fire Folo

Investigators say an electrical problem sparked a fire which destroyed a group home on Route 61... in Fountain Springs... near Ashland... in Schuylkill County. The blaze broke out at midday Monday... but luckily the three people and staff members were not at the residence when flames erupted.

 

Railroad Theft

State Police from Milton are trying to figure out who made off with thousands of pounds of railroading material from the National Railway Historical Society site near Watsontown. Stolen from the site were tie plates and connector bars... used to keep track in place. The items were believed to have been taken over the past month. If you have information on the theft... call State Police at Milton.

 

NEPA Unemployment

The unemployment rate across Northeastern Pennsylvania is at it's lowest level in 18 – months. The state Department of Labor and Industry says the March rate is 8.4%. That's two – tenths of a percentage point lower than was recorded in February. The reason... according to experts... more and more people are re-entering the work force. Most of the counties in the 12-county area showed decreases in unemployment during March.

 

Northumberland County Jobs

Some changes in the employment in Northumberland County. The County's Salary Board eliminating three positions this week... which included a county detective. However, the board reinstated a secretary's position in the District Attorney's office. Also eliminated was a position in the engineer's office... and a clerk in the tax assessment office. The changes means Northumberland County will save an estimated $80,000 a year.

BU Lacrosse

The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team upset Gannon 20-13 Tuesday in the PSAC Quarterfinals in Erie. On Friday, the Huskies will play at Lock Haven in the conference semifinals.

 

High School Baseball

In high school baseball Tuesday... Bloomsburg defeated North Schuylkill 8 to 3.

 

High School Softball

In girls high school softball Tuesday... Montgomery downed Benton 7 to 2... Bloomsburg blanked Millville 20 to nothing... Mifflinburg defeated Central Columbia 5 to 3... Danville got by Shamokin 1 to nothing... Southern Columbia getting by St John Neumann 13 to 1.

 

Philadelphia 76er's

The Philadelphia 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls 109-92 Tuesday night to even their NBA Playoff series at one game apiece. Game three will be Friday night in Philadelphia.

 

Philadelphia Flyers

In the National Hockey League playoffs last night, the New Jersey Devils beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 to even their series at one game apiece. Game three is tomorrow night in New Jersey.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia's John Mayberry doubled off Atlanta's Jonny Venters, then scored the go-ahead run to grab a 4 to 2 victory over the Braves at Turner Field Tuesday night. It was the first game of a six – game road trip. Wednesday night... the Phils and the Braves tangle once again. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 6:35 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280. The first pitch to be tossed at 7:10.
