An estimated 175 – million visitors stop and stay in PA... and it touches all of us... so says Rob Fulton from the Pennsylvania Association of Travel & Tourism. And if you question the numbers statewide... the Columbia – Montour visitor's bureau says nearly a million people a season go through the turnstiles at Knoebel's Amusement Resort which hugs the Columbia – Northumberland County line.
A state police fire marshal will be called in to see what started a small blaze in a Berwick apartment on Monday... critically injuring a man. Our media partner... Newswatch 16 says police, fire crews and an ambulance rushed to the home in the 600 block of Green Street at mid – day after renters on the first floor discovered smoke seeping in to their apartment. The man... who has yet to be identified... was airlifted to the Lehigh Valley Burn Center in Allentown for treatment. No word as to what started that fire in an apartment on Green Street in Berwick.
Investigators say the fire that extensively damaged a vacant home on South Canal Street in Shickshinny Sunday night is a case of arson. The fire broke out at the rear of the building. The home had been vacant since the 2006 flood... and was knocked off its foundation by last September's flooding. There is also a report of people running from the building moments before the fire was discovered. If you have information about the blaze... call Shickshinny police.
Berwick Brush Pickup
Berwick Borough Public Works crews have started... and will continue to pick up brush placed at curbside. Pick up began Monday in the 1st Ward. Brush will be picked up Tuesday in the 2nd Ward.... Wednesday in the third... and Thursday in the Fourth Ward. Borough officials says the brush is to be on the curb by daybreak. Another opportunity for homeowners is to take the brush to the recycling and compost area at the boro's test track on South Eaton Street.
Barletta / Student Loans
Congressman Lou Barletta of Hazleton... who represents Columbia County and most of Northeastern Pennsylvania... has voted to prevent the doubling of federal student loan interest rates slated for the summer. At the same time... Representative Barletta criticized bureaucrats in Washington for politicizing those rates. Under the proposal... the legislation provides a one-year extension of the 3.4% subsidized Stafford Loan interest rate paid for by rolling back government overspending.
Gas prices continue to plummet across all of northeastern Pennsylvania. The Triple – A Fuel Gauge report says the average price of self – serve, unleaded regular is hanging in there at $3.81 a gallon. That's down two cents from the weekend... and down seven cents from last week. A month ago... we were paying $3.90 a gallon. Prices are expected to stabilize... but could go up as the Memorial Day holiday approaches.

In high school baseball yesterday... Berwick downed Nanticoke 5 to 1... Mifflin County getting by Danville 7 to 1... Montgomery blanked Benton 8 to nothing... Muncy got by Millville 13 to 1... Southern Columbia defeated Saint John Neumann 13 to 3.

In girls softball... Berwick squeaked by Nanticoke 4 to 3... Hughesville blanked Benton 15 to 0... Danville defeated Line Mountain 7 to 3... Southern Columbia downing Columbia Montour Vo Tech 8 to 1.
For the 29th consecutive season, a Bloomsburg University softball team has earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. The Huskies will play West Virginia Wesleyan Friday at 1 o'clock in the Atlantic Two Regional which will be held at California University of Pennsylvania.
The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team lost a 5-4 decision to Shaw University Monday in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Final in Raleigh, North Carolina. With the loss, Bloomsburg concludes the season with a record of 16-6.
A pretty good night for the Philadelphia Phillies. They defeated the Chicago Cubs 6 to 4. Vance Worley pitching seven quality innings... giving up just five hits and one earned run.
