Shickshinny Fire

A state police fire marshal is expected along South Canal Street in Shickshinny Monday to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a vacant home... and severely damaged an adjoining structure late Sunday night. Luzerne County fire dispatch initially toned out firemen from Shickshinny and Mocanaqua... with additional alarms for Hunlock Creek and Berwick's Reliance... and eventually Salem Township for their air truck. Firemen remained at the scene for several hours until the flames and the resulting embers were extinguished.

 

Job Corps

A disturbance at the Red Rock Job Corps Center got out of hand Sunday... forcing dozens of police officers to converge on the facility. The uproar was over a dance that was canceled Saturday night... with the Press – Enterprise reporting in Monday's edition... some students were unhappy with the cancellation. On Sunday... the students allegedly started assaulting staffers when some of the kids were called in to talk about the unruliness the night before. The situation was brought under control around 9 O'clock last night. Police say some of the teens are in custody and will face charges.

 

109th House District

There were no surprises in the race for the Democratic nomination for the 109th state house district. Bloomsburg Mayor Dan Knorr handily defeating challenger James Geffken of Sugarloaf Township. Now... Knorr goes up against incumbent Republican David Millard in the November general election.  Knorr says he'll make the race competitive every step of the way. Millard has been able to fend off challenges over the years... and this election cycle is no different. Millard and Knorr have been out on the streets since last week's primary... pressing the flesh... and getting to the electorate.

 

Jamboree

Despite Saturday's chilly weather... a lot of people made their way to Main Street for the 34th annual Renaissance Jamboree. Non-profit groups supplemented vendors and entertainment. Bloomsburg University instructor Deb Stryker was handling the dunk booth for Student Links to the Education of the Deaf... telling us that the booth is where they raise money to send hearing impaired kids to Camp Victory near Millville. Initial planning gets underway in a few weeks for the 2013 edition of Renaissance Jamboree.

 

Power Outage

The power is back on in the Hazleton area... thieves tried to make off with copper wire from a live PPL transmission line in Hazle Township at the start of the weekend.... disrupting power for a couple of hours. Just over 8,000 customers were without juice from Hazle Township to the Buck Mountain area.  A PPL spokesman said the thieves were dealing with a 69 Kilovolt transmission line... and could have electrocuted themselves. Police are investigating the incident.

 

Weatherly

Folks in Weatherly are planning a huge celebration for their borough's 150th anniversary next year. A lot is planned for the three – day event... including a circus and a dinner. An estimated 30 volunteers are involved in the planning for the 150 anniversary in Weatherly... in Carbon County.

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team dropped a 10-9 decision to IUP Sunday in the PSAC Championship game at the Drifton Complex near Hazleton. The Huskies will now await word on a bid to the NCAA Championships. Those pairings will be announced Monday.

 

BU Football

All pro lineman Jahir Evans was among the former Bloomsburg University football players on hand Saturday at a ceremony naming the Redman Stadium playing surface- Danny Hale Field. Hale is the all time winningest coach in school history. The Maroon & Gold game, which concluded spring drills for the Huskies, followed the ceremony. Highlights of the spring game included a 66 yard touchdown run by Franklyn Quiteh and a 50 yard field goal by Dan Fisher. The Huskies open the 2012 season, Friday, August 31st at Stone Hill College in Easton, Massachusetts.

 

Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in overtime Sunday in the opening game of their NHL playoff series. Game two will be Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies fell to 10 and 12 on the season.... following Sunday's 5 to 1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies scored their only run in the ninth inning thanks to Cubs closer Carlos Marmol... who walked three batters and allowed one single to force home a run. The Phils and Cubs meet again tonight in the final face – off in their four game series. You can catch all the action starting with the pre-game show Monday night at 6:30... with the first pitch tossed at 7:05... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.
