Primary Elections / 109th District

Primary election voting is over and there are winners.... as well as losers. In the most watched race in Columbia County.... and with all 42 precincts reporting... Democrat Dan Knorr will face incumbent Republican David Millard in the race for the 109th house district seat. Knorr defeating opponent James Geffken of Sugarloaf Township... getting 73 percent of the vote.

 

Primary Elections /Congress

In other races of interest... in the Democratic primary to find out who will meet incumbent Republican Congressman Lou Barletta in the fall... and with all polls reporting... Gene Stilp gathered 55 percent of the vote... over Bill Vinsko

 

Primary Elections / US Senate

Republican Tom Smith will be facing Bob Casey, Jr in the race for the US Senator from Pennsylvania. Smith... defeating four challengers by getting 40 – percent of the vote.

 

Primary Elections / GOP Presidential

Mitt Romney laid claim to the fiercely contested Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night. He swept five states... including Pennsylvania. Meantime... GOP contender Newt Gingrich is expected to bow out of the contest this week. No word if Ron Paul plans to stay in the race.

 

Steam Electric Station

Some extra maintenance to take place on the Unit 1 main turbine at PPL's Steam Electric station in Salem Township... in Luzerne County. Inspectors finding cracks in the turbine blades that are similar to damage found and repaired in 2011. However, a utility spokesman says the cracks are less extensive than those found last year. The problem will be taken care of during the current shutdown... with Unit 1 expected to be back on line next month. Meantime... as a precaution... Unit 2 will be shut down once Unit 1 is back on line in order to check the turbine blades.

 

Portable Meth Lab

No one is in custody... but Pennsylvania State Police are trying to find out who dumped meth making supplies near the intersection of Harrison and Paperdale Road... in Fishing Creek Township. Police say a plastic bottle... believed to be used in the “one pot method” of making meth was discovered along the side of the road by a person living in the area. That bottle was taken for examination by the PSP's Clandestine Laboratory Response Team.

 

Arson Charges

State Police at Milton have filed additional charges against two former Potts Grove firefighters. 35 – year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg... and 19 – year old Zane Snyder are accused of torching a barn... a unoccupied tractor – trailer and a vacant home... all in Northumberland County. The pair have already been charged with arson in several other cases in the Potts Grove area. Jacobs and Snyder remain in the Montour County Jail in Danville.

 

Hazleton Robberies

A three – time suspected Hazleton bank robber is now in police custody. 33 – year old Shawn Luther Kelley of East Chestnut Street is accused of robbing the Citizens Bank in West Hazleton Tuesday afternoon. He's also suspected in the heists at the PNC Bank in Hazle Township nearly two weeks ago... as well as the Choice One Community Credit Union in Hazleton days later. Kelley is charged robbery and theft by unlawful taking.

 

Bridge Rehab

A bridge project will get underway Wednesday in neighboring Montour County. PennDOT's Rick Mason says crews will begin a bridge rehab project on Route 1003... the Muncy – Exchange Road in Anthony Township. A PennDOT crew will remove the existing blacktop surface and railing... and install a new reinforced – concrete deck....parapets and guard rail. A detour will be in place during the six week construction period.

 

Sugarloaf Fire

The state police fire marshal is still trying to figure out what started a blaze which extensively damaged a home on Twin Lane in Sugarloaf Township... in Luzerne County. The fire was discovered mid-afternoon on Monday. Authorities say five people lived in the home. They're being helped by the American Red Cross.

 

Musto Trial

Federal prosecutors have learned through court paper that former State Senator Raphael Musto is too ill to prepare for his defense in his upcoming bribery trial. His trial has already been delayed twice due to medical issues... and it's believed his attorneys will ask for a third postponement. The 83-year-old Pittston Township Democrat is scheduled to stand trial in June.

Philadelphia Phillies

A trio of homers powered the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the middle test of a three-game set at Chase Field Tuesday night. Hunter Pence and Laynce Nix both hit two-run blasts off Arizona starter Josh Collmenter in the fourth inning, while Shane Victorino added a lead-off shot in the eighth. The Phil's and D-Back's meet again Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix. You can catch the action with the pre – game show at 3:05... with the first pitch scheduled for 3:40... on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.

 

High School Baseball

In high school baseball yesterday... Sullivan County defeated Columbia Montour Vo Tech 7 to 1.

 

High School Softball

In girls softball... Bloomsburg blanked Sullivan County 18 to nothing... Muncy getting by Benton 5 to nothing... Southern Columbia downed Montgomery 11 to 5.

 

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team will play Gannon Wednesday afternoon on the first day of the PSAC Championships. The tournament, which includes 9 teams, will be played at the Drifton Softball Complex near Hazleton. Bloomsburg has a 32-12 record. The game against Gannon begins at 1 O'clock.
