Block party 2012 in Bloomsburg over the weekend. For many... it was just a rite of passage for college age students, but there was some rowdiness. Police making arrests... and there were some visits to the local hospital emergency room for alcohol poisoning... a typical by-product of the get together. Law enforcement will take a look at the stats to see what worked and what didn't so they can prepare for the 2013 edition of Block Party.
Campus Sex Assault
Bloomsburg University Police are looking for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in her Mount Olympus Apartment early Sunday morning. The University's website says black male knocked on the door of the woman... asking to use a cell phone charger. Once inside... the man... known by the name of “Maine” allegedly sexually assaulted the women. He remains on the loose this morning.
Fairgrounds Clean Up
The Bloomsburg Fairgrounds are in a lot better shape now... than what they were last week. It's all due to several hundred people who showed up over the weekend for one last concerted clean up effort. Included in that number was an estimated 400 Mennonites who helped as part of their on – going service project.
A Numidia – area family is picking up the pieces of their lives... after a fire of undetermined origin destroyed their home over the weekend. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition the Mill Road home of Jeff Cox... and his wife, Dawn, went up in flames around 8:30 Saturday night. The fire took place after the family preformed extensive remodeling on the home over the past couple of years.
Salem Twp Fire
It took only minutes for a large, single – wide trailer to go up in smoke near the Columbia – Luzerne County line Saturday night. A family of five who lived there was forced outside... but they lost two dogs in the flames. Investigators believe the fire started in the mobile home's bathroom.
A change of ownership of the Cinema Center along Route 11... in Scott Township. That multiplex movie theater... along with others in Selinsgrove... Reading... Camp Hill and Williamsport... have been sold by the Troutman family to New Jersey – Based Digital Cinema Destinations Corporation. The sale was closed late last week... and published reports say Digital Cinema plans to keep things the way they are, but will turn the current theaters into an interactive entertainment destination. Not included in the sale is the Sky Vu Drive-in theater in Gratz.
Hazleton police spent the weekend looking for a man who held up the Choice One Community Credit Union late Friday. Police say he strolled into the Sherman Court building... handed the teller a note... and fled on foot. The man is described as a thin white male. If you have information about the stick up... you're asked to call Hazleton Police.
Cherry Blossom Festival
Folks in Wilkes – Barre are gearing up for this weekend's annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Kirby Park. One of the highlights will be the unveiling of a Babe Ruth Commemorative marker. That happens at 3 O'clock Saturday afternoon. The event is a two – day affair that begins Saturday morning.
The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team won the PSAC championship over the weekend. The Huskies defeated 3 time defending champion Kutztown 5-0. It was 22nd men's tennis title in school history.
The Bloomsburg University football team will conclude spring drills this Saturday with the annual Maroon & Gold game. Assistant coach Jack Lydick says Saturday's game is important for the players competing for the starting quarterback position since they're always being evaluated. The Philadelphia Flyers clinched their series with the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday. The Flyers beat the Pens 5-1 to take the series 4 games to 2.
Errors and quiet bats helped doom Joe Blanton and Co. on Sunday, as the Philadelphia Phillies dropped it's finale with the San Diego Padres 6 to 1. The loss places the Phil's in last place in the National League East. Philadelphia now moves on to face the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight in Phoenix.
