The eastbound lane of Interstate 80 between Mifflinville and Conyngham is back open to traffic Wednesday morning. That part of the highway was closed for six hours Tuesday afternoon after two tractor – trailers collided east of the Columbia – Luzerne County line. Police say one of the big rig drivers was pulling onto the highway... and the driver of the approaching rig didn't have his eyes on the road... running into the rear of the first truck. The second truck jackknifed and burst into flames. Luckily... no one was injured... but the accident tied up traffic for hours... and forced detours through Mifflinville and Nescopeck.
Caregivers / Millard
State Representative David Millard will hold a caregiver support forum tonight in Bloomsburg. The forum is designed to prepare those who have aging relatives.... who are thrust into the role of a caregiver with little or no preparation. The forum gets underway at 6:30 Wednesday night at Representative Millard's office in the Bloomsburg technology center on Market Street.
Barletta / GSA
That $800,000 spent by the General Services Administration on a Las Vegas gathering has Columbia County congressman Lou Barletta a bit out of sorts. During a hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday... Barletta chastised now – fired Robert Peck who was part of the GSA entourage. If you recall... the GSA spent $823,000 taxpayer dollars to fund the Las Vegas trip. That's an estimated $600,000 over budget.
Maybe you've seen that big freight trailer parked in the Bloomsburg YMCA parking lot on East 7th Street. That's where items used in the “Y's” annual yard sale are being stored. The indoor yard and bake sale will be held on May 19th at the “Y” on East 7th Street.
More air service is coming to northeastern Pennsylvania. Officials at the Wilkes – Barre / Scranton airport tell us Allegiant Air will soon offer non – stop flights between Avoca and the Orlando – Sanford Airport in Central Florida. There will be two round trip flights a week begin June 21st. Allegiant says some one – way fares will be as low as $90.00.
A 32 – year old Hanover Township man has pleaded guilty to stealing a skull from a Wilkes – Barre Cemetery.... as well as stabbing a man during a fight last year. Jesse Geasey was found guilty of taking the skull of a woman from the Hollenback Cemetery. She died in 1926. At the same time... he pleaded guilty to stabbing William Shotwell during a scuffle on a Wilkes – Barre street corner.
Charges / Hearing
A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday morning for 21 – year old James Rankin. He's the alleged home invasion artist who was shot by a Wilkes – Barre police officer. The officer was cleared in the shooting, but Rankin faces a long list of charges including aggravated assault on 28 – year old Naeem Ford and 22 – year old Margarita Martinez. Published reports say Rankin beat Ford so forcefully... he bent a titanium rod in his leg used to repair a broken femur. Rankin is lodged in the Luzerne County Jail.
Governor Corbett will be in our area Friday. The governor to attend a fund raiser for State Representative Kurt Masser... seeking re-election for his 107th district seat. The $1,000 per couple event will be held at the Indian Hills Golf and Tennis Club.
High School Baseball
In high school baseball Tuesday... Montgomery getting by Columbia Montour Vo Tech 14 to 2... Bloomsburg defeated Shamokin 5 to 1.
Southern Columbia blanked Benton 16 to nothing... Central Columbia getting by South Williamsport 7 to 2... It took 9 innings, but Jersey Shore defeated Danville 3 to 2.
Southern Track & Field
The Southern Columbia boys track & Field team remained unbeaten with a 120-29 win over Bloomsburg Tuesday. It was the Tigers' 20th consecutive dual meet victory dating back to the 2009 season.
It was not a good night for the Philadelphia Phillies as they visited San Francisco Tuesday. And although the Phillies carried the National League's second – best batting average into last night's game.... they were defeated 4 to 2.
