Primary Absentee Application

If you plan to vote in this month's primary by absentee ballot.... time is running out to apply for an absentee ballot. The close of business today is the last day to turn in your application. Matt Repasky, Columbia County's Chief Registrar, says retuning an application by mail is not an option forcing you to drop by his office at the Courthouse Annex before 5 O'clock Tuesday afternoon.

 

Fairgrounds Clean – Up

Hundreds of people are expected to descend on the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds on Saturday in a concerted effort to clean – up from the September floods. Included in that number are 400 to 500 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The clean up is open to anyone who wants to lend a helping hand.

 

Truck Fire

Some scary moments near the corner of East Main and Iron Streets Monday afternoon. BloomUToday.com is reporting a custom pick – up truck driven by Chris Riley of Danville caught fire when when he tried to start it. Riley and a friend were able to escape... but they could do nothing but watch... as Bloomsburg firemen squelched the blaze. The truck is considered a total loss.

 

Hazleton Bank

State police continue their investigation into the robbery of the PNC Bank on Route 93 in Hazle Township Monday morning. The robbery went down shortly after the bank opened. Police say a man wearing a surgical mask and glove strolled into the building... handed the teller a note... got some money and fled. If you have information on the robber... call State Police at Hazleton.

 

Bat Attack Trial

A West Hazleton man will go on trial in June for his part in the baseball bat beating of a pair of brothers. 38 – year old William Gogel faces a long list of charges in the January 2010 assault on Frank and Thomas Luddy. Gogel was to have gone on trial this week, but his attorney sought... and was granted a continuance until June.

 

Impact Fee

On a vote of 6 to 5.... Luzerne County now can place impact fees on natural gas drillers who venture into the county. The money... if any... would be used to repair roads and infrastructure if and when drilling became a big issue in the county. Under so – called ACT 13.... Counties had until yesterday to decide whether or not to accept a portion of revenue from drillers.

 

Gas Prices

A mixed bag on the gas price front across northeastern Pennsylvania. The latest Triple – A fuel gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular holding steady at $3.95 a gallon. That's the same as it was over the weekend... and a penny lower than what it was a week ago. But... the average price of gasoline has risen sixteen cents from a month ago.

 

Turbot Twp Homicide

State police aren't saying much... but what they're not saying is profound. Investigators are now calling the death of a Turbot Township woman... near Watsontown... in Northumberland County a homicide. Patricia Thomas died of a single gunshot wound over the weekend. Her husband... Robert... telling investigators that someone broke into their home early Saturday morning. He grabbed his handgun... and told investigators he was struck on the head... with a weapon going off... the bullet striking Mrs. Thomas. Although police say they're discounting the burglary theory... they still haven't taken anyone into custody.

 

Fire Folo

The death of a 51 – year old Ranshaw man over the weekend has been ruled accidental. Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grimm said the death of Roxie Bingaman was an accident due to smoke inhalation and burns. Bingham was pulled from his burning house in the 200 – block of Main Street Saturday morning... and air lifted to the Lehigh Valley Hospital. He died Sunday. A state police fire marshal still has not pinpointed the cause of the Saturday's fire in Ranshaw.

 

Chris Pfaff

Remember Chris Pfaff... a Republican... who ran unsuccessfully back in the 90's for the 107th house seat. He's back in this year's political scene... this time as a democrat... facing another democrat... Ted Yeager... in next week's primary. It's all in an effort to upset incumbent Republican Kurt Masser in November. The 107th district includes four townships in Columbia... all of Montour and parts of Northumberland Counties.

In high school baseball Monday.... Berwick defeated Holy Redeemer 6 to 4. Southern Columbia downed Benton 16 to 1. Selinsgrove getting by Danville 22 to 11.

 

High School Girls Softball

In girls softball... Central Columbia just got by Selinsgrove 3 to 2.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Two – time Cy Young award winner Roy Halladay had a pretty good night on the west coast... as the Philadelphia Phillies got past the San Francisco Giants 5 to 2 Monday night. Halladay struck out six and allowed seven hits in eight innings. The Phil's and Giants face each other Tuesday night. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 9:40 on News Radio 930, 94.7, 104.3 & Berwick's 1280.
