Block Party

The countdown is underway to this weekend's block Party in Bloomsburg... aimed at college and university age students. The street party brings thousands of people into Bloomsburg from out – of – town.... and it's a big enforcement event... so says Police Chief Leo Sokoloski. Block Party began in 1993 as a fundraiser... and since that time... it's taken a life its own. The event is not sanctioned by either Bloomsburg University or the Town.

 

ATV Fatal

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for a 27 – year old Catawissa man... killed in an ATV accident last Thursday in West Virginia. Nathaniel Dobeck died when he lost control of his ATV in Logan County. Authorities telling a Huntington TV station Dobeck was not wearing a helmet. Dobeck's services to be held at the C-J Lucas Funeral Home on Vine Street in Mt. Carmel starting at noon.

 

Alleged Shooter

Two men are in the Luzerne County jail after being picked up in Montgomery County over the weekend. William Gronosky of Nanticoke... and Kevin Williams of Philadelphia.. both 28... were on the run for two days... after Gronosky allegedly fired two shots at a Pennsylvania State Trooper in West Nanticoke. That incident happened near the Carousel Lounge. Also in custody is 23 – year old Ashley Evans of Nanticoke. She is accused of helping the pair escape.

 

PennDOT

PennDOT isn't your average Pennsylvania agency that only plows snow and fixes potholes. That word from the agency's Rick Mason telling us an open house will take place on the 26th of the month at the Montoursville office on Jordan Avenue. Mason says PennDOT employees will be on hand to talk about bridge work... and a computer showing current agency job openings.

 

Elections Director

A landmark meeting is on tap for Monday night for the Luzerne County Board of Elections. It's the first time they've met since Director of Elections Leonard Piazza was fired. Piazza's termination came only weeks before Pennsylvania's April 24th primary. The board won't question Piazza's termination... but are expected to appoint Tom Pizano as interim director.

 

Murder Suspects

Two Wilkes – Barre men have been charged in connection with an early Sunday morning shooting outside an Allentown bar. Published reports say 37 – year old Amos Muir and 29 – year old Brian Francis... as well as a third man are charged with murder. The trio are now in jail awaiting court action.

 

Burglary / Shooting

An autopsy is scheduled Monday for 64 – year old Patricia Thomas of Turbot Township... in Northumberland County. Police say she died during a burglary attempt over the weekend at their home. Specifically... Thomas' husband, Robert, was awakened by someone in their home and grabbed his handgun. Thomas telling police he was hit over the head... with his wife killed by a single gunshot. State Police are continuing their investigation... and are not saying if a bullet from Robert Thomas' weapon killed his wife.

 

Ranshaw Fire

A weekend fire in Ranshaw has led to the death of a 51 – year old man. Authorities say Roxie Bingaman was burned when a fire broke out in his home in the 2-hundred block of Main Street early Saturday morning. A published report says his death was confirmed by a relative. His wife escaped the burning home. Authorities say the fire was due to careless smoking on the part of Roxie Bingaman.

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a doubleheader from Holy Family Sunday at Hutchinson Field. The Huskies won the first game 7-1 and the nightcap 2-1. Bloomsburg now has a record of 30-10. This Friday the Huskies have a home doubleheader against Lock Haven.

 

Central Columbia

Central Columbia's sophomore sprinter Ellen Shepard finished first in the 100 meter dash at Saturday's Susquehanna University High School Classic. Shepard also anchored Central's winning 400 meter relay team. At the Purple & White relays in Shamokin, the Southern Columbia boys track & field team finished second to Mount Carmel in the team standings.

 

Philly Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 8-4 Sunday to take a three games to none lead in their best of 7 series. Game four will be Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

 

Philadelphia Phillies

Ty Wigginton and Laynce Nix gave Philadelphia's struggling offense a boost. Wigginton drove in four runs and Nix had a tiebreaking double to support Cole Hammels to give the Phillies an 8 to 2 win over the New York Mets. Monday night... the Phill's are on the west coast to take on the San Francisco Giants. You can catch all the action starting with the pre – game show at 9:40... on News Radio 930... 94.7 and 104.3... as well as Berwick's 1280. The first pitch planned for 10:15.
