Most of the week has been tinder dry... and the showers forecast over the next day or so won't elevate the problem. Earlier this week brush fires were reported in rural areas... one even taking place in the mulch of a Bloomsburg Supermarket. Fire Chief Bob Rupp says carelessness is a big cause of springtime fires... such as cigarette butts being tossed nondiscriminatory. Rain and higher humidity are needed to keep the dangers of brush fires from starting.
A nurse from Northumberland is in the Montour County Jail after she was arrested on felony drug charges. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition... 27 – year old Vanessa Rhodes is accused of altering records to allegedly obtain Oxycodone tablets while working at the Grandview Health Homes in late 2010. An internal audit found the problem. Rhodes was arraigned on Tuesday on a charge of with possession of a controlled substance... and is in jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.
It didn't take long for Crawford, Incorporated to bring Kidsburg... in Bloomsburg's Town Park to its end. The kids' play area was constructed in the mid - 90's... and since that time... floods and government regulations... as well as age marked an end to the play area. It only took a couple of hours with the help of a back loader... the wooden structure came tumbling down. The remains ending up in a large dump truck, which were hauled away. Kidsburg is expected to be replaced by a play area that is up to date... and conforms to federal government standards.

The Pennsylvania House has okayed legislation aimed at rehabilitating or replacing railroad bridges damaged during last year's flooding. Republican Karen Boback... who represents Columbia, Luzerne and Wyoming Counties in the state house... says her legislation is an important part of recovering from the floods.
A late night for Bloomsburg firemen Tuesday night. The town's fire sirens went off around 10:30 when a smoke alarm was activated at student housing in the 300 block of Lightstreet Road. A deputy chief... and two pieces of apparatus arrived on scene... only to find a defective smoke alarm. Firefighters were back in quarters on Market Street within 30 minutes of the alarm.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday for 14 – year old Tyler Winstead who was gunned down on Hill Street in Wilkes – Barre last Thursday. On Tuesday... students at GAR Junior / Senior High School were greeted by counselors on the first day back from Easter break to talk about the shooting. Now... people who live on Hill Street say they're apprehensive... since no one is in custody.
Remember those bullets found in a bathroom of the Hazleton Area School District's 9th grade center last week. School officials now say... they were intended for target shooting at a student's home. State police say a 16 - year old boy gave 83, .22 caliber bullets to a 16 – year old Rock Glen teenager... who stashed them in a waste can intending to retrieve them. But that didn't happen... and the cartridges were found by school custodian's. Now... both teens are charged in the case.
Two people have been arrested.... accused of making Meth... along Route 118 near Red Rock in Luzerne County. Police say Chris Cragle and Shannon Lewis remain in the Luzerne County Jail. Both face a long list of charges. The meth lab... police say... was in a recreational vehicle near Ricketts Glen State Park.
The parent company of St. Catherine's Medical Center near Ashland... has filed for Chapter 11th bankruptcy. It happened Monday... weeks after the center was told by the state department of health not to admit patients.... followed by the closing of the emergency room.... and the facilities long term care center. An investigative report by our media partner... Newswatch 16... determined the hospital lacked the basic necessities. Lehighton attorney William Schwab was appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice to handle the bankruptcy proceedings.
Curley / Schultz
The Dauphin County judge presiding over the perjury case of former Penn State administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz has scheduled a court date and deadlines for pretrial motions. Curley and Schultz are expected to be in court in Harrisburg for a status conference on June 1st. Both men are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a shower incident in 2002 involving former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and a young boy. They’re also charged with failing to report the alleged abuse. Curley and Schultz have maintained their innocence and have asked the judge to drop their cases.
The Bloomsburg University softball team came through with two extra innings walk-off wins against Mansfield Tuesday at Hutchinson Field. The Huskies won the first game 4-2 in 8 innings. They also won the nightcap of the doubleheader 6-5 in 10 innings. Bloomsburg now has a record of 26-8. They will be back in action Friday in a doubleheader at IUP.
High School Sports
In high school baseball Tuesday... Columbia – Montour Vo-Tech defeated Benton 17 to 3. In girls softball... Warrior Run downed Danville 2 to nothing.... and Columbia – Montour Vo-Tech just got by Benton 6 to 5.
The Philadelphia Phillies will try and snap a three game losing streak Wednesday night... when they take on the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. Roy Halladay will face Josh Johnson.
