Nuke Plant Maintenance

Getting ready to do some maintenance work on Unit 1 of the Pennsylvania Power and Light Steam Electric Station in Salem Township in Luzerne County... north of Berwick. The unit was shut down over the weekend after nearly 300 days of consecutive operation. Workers will replace about 40% percent of the uranium fuel and complete hundreds of scheduled equipment maintenance upgrades.

 

The Big Event

Despite the rain and chill in the air... hundreds of Bloomsburg University College students did their part to help town residents clean up on Saturday. The University students helping folks up and down Market Street... as well as Town Park... devastated by September flooding.

 

Big Brothers / Big Sisters

A couple of hundred people turned out Saturday at the P-Nut Bowl in Bloomsburg Saturday. It was for a good cause as the Big Brothers / Big Sisters organization held their annual Bowl for Kids Sake. The event is a major fund raiser, but they also get an allocation from the United Way... as well as individual donations.

 

Hospital Shuttered

An Ashland – area hospital is not only is banned from admitting new patients.... they can't operate their emergency room or provide out – patient services. That order from the PA Department of Health to St. Catherine Medical Center. The mandate follows an investigation which found alleged violations that may pose a threat to the health and safety of patients. The nearest hospitals to St. Catherine’s is either Shamokin or Pottsville.

 

Hazleton Area Stabbing

A Philadelphia – area man is in the Luzerne County Prison after he allegedly stabbed his father over the weekend. State police at Hazleton say 49 – year old Gilbert Schaffer, Jr. is facing an aggravated assault charge after allegedly stabbing his 77 – year old father in the back after he intervened in an argument between Shaffer and his mother. Gilbert Schaffer, Senior is in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center being treated for his injuries.

 

Stabler Viewing

A viewing will be held Wednesday for 19- year old Christoper Stabler of Bloomsburg. He died in a one - car accident at the start of the weekend when he lost control of his car and it overturned on winding road in Fishing Creek Township. State Police at Bloomsburg tell us Stabler wasn't wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Two passengers with him were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Wednesday's viewing to take place at Visneski Funeral home in Danville.

BU Softball

The Bloomsburg University softball team split a doubleheader with Shippensburg over the weekend at Hutchinson Field. The Huskies won the first game 8-0 but lost the nightcap 12-3. The Huskies now have a record of 19-7. They play IUP at home tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 2:30.

 

BU Baseball

Bloomsburg University senior Keith Meyer had 6 hits in 9 at bats Saturday as the Husky baseball team split a doubleheader with Shippensburg. Bloomsburg will take a record of 15-13 into a Wednesday doubleheader at Clarion.

 

NCAA Men's Basketball

The NCAA men's basketball tournament ends Monday night in New Orleans with the national championship game. Kentucky takes on Kansas in a 9 o'clock start.

 

NCAA Women's Basketball

In the women's final four Sunday night in Denver... Notre Dame downed Connecticut 83 - 75 in overtime and Baylor defeated Stanford 59 – 47. The women's national championship game will be played Tuesday night.
