After experiencing March as one of the warmest on record... here comes a high pressure area from Canada... pumping in cold weather across the northeast. Temperatures in the upper 20's to lower 30's Tuesday morning... and it won't break out of the 40's all day. Barry Lambert with the National Weather Service in State College says we can expect more cold weather before it's safe for tender plants.
The Bloomsburg Town Council will meet Thursday night in a special session. The only topic is the future of newly – hired administrator Ron Mull.... now on a paid leave while an attorney wraps up an investigation into Mull's possible policy violations. If you recall... Mull was escorted from Town Hall nearly three weeks ago... and has been off the job since. Former administrator Carol Mass is pinch – hitting at $60 an hour... while Mull is being paid his $75,000 a year salary... while a labor relations attorney is earning $300 an hour while he investigates Mull's actions. Thursday night's meeting will start with an executive session at 6 O'clock at Council Chamber at Town Hall.
There is a move afoot to honor military veterans of the area... and it centers around Bloomsburg Town Park. During last night's Town Council meeting... Mayor Dan Knorr spoke of disagreements in the past... and how a new committee will now use a clean sheet of paper to bring the proposal to reality. No timetable has been established for the proposed new Veterans Memorial.
A Mainville man is dead when a tire from a skid – steer exploded as he and his son were attempting to mount the tire on a wheel using ether at the family home on West Maple Lane. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition 61 – year old Jim Shuman died when he was struck in the head by the wheel. His son... Josh... was knocked out by the explosion and transported for treatment at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Shuman was a long time farmer... as well as a custodian at the Beaver – Main Elementary School.
Two men... members of the Potts Grove Fire Department... are jailed on a quarter million dollars bond each... after they were charged last night with arson. 35 – year old Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg... and 19 – year old Zane Snyder of Milton are accused of setting fire to an abandon home on Kelly's Dam Road in Liberty Township in Montour County. They were arraigned before District Judge Marvin Shrawder. The Sunbury Daily Item reports the pair are also expected to be charged with setting three other fires in Montour County... several fires in Northumberland County... as well as making false reports in Union County.
Bloomsburg University students are getting ready for this years “big event” which takes place Saturday. It's an opportunity for students to show their appreciation to town residents by performing chores around the area. The Big Event gets underway Saturday at the square... with nearly 1,100 college – age students fanning out south on Market Street... and selected areas of Bloomsburg.
The Pennsylvania Commission for Women started the week hosting a panel discussion about the empowerment of woman. One of the panelists was State Representative Karen Boback who serves Columbia, Luzerne and Wyoming Counties. Ms Boback joined a half – dozen panelists with a variety of backgrounds.
Southeastern Pennsylvania will get an early start on this year's trout season. WHLM's Matt Paul reports opening day is Saturday for 18 – counties... including anglers in neighboring Schuylkill County. The fish and game commission says Columbia and Montour County streams will be open for fishing on April 14th.
Republican state Senator Jane Orie... accused of using her state-funded legislative staff to perform campaign work for herself and a state judge who’s her sister... was convicted Monday on 14 counts of theft of services, conflict of interest and forgery. She is likely to be forced from the Senate... losing her pension in the process. 50 – year old Orie was acquitted of 10 other counts including perjury and election code violations.
One of the two men charged with killing a man on a Hazleton Street corner early last year... has accepted a plea deal. Angel Sanchez pleaded guilty to third degree murder on Monday in the death of 21 – year old Vladimir Ruiz. The 21 – year old Sanchez could get up to 40 – year in prison when he's sentenced May 29th. Also charged with the crime is 25 – year old Rodolfo Hiraldo – Perez. A jury is expected to hear his case... and if found guilty... Hiraldo – Perez could face life in prison.

Police in the Hazleton area have arrested the man accused of allegedly running down a second man with his pick up truck Sunday night. 20 – year old Justin Maylath of Jeddo was arrested and faces a long list of charges after he allegedly struck 18 – year old Vincent Catrone, Jr. of Hazleton. The incident shut down State Route 940 and Hillside drive for a couple of hours. Maylath was found at his Jeddo home. Catrone was taken to Geisinger Medical Center where he remains for treatment of injuries.
Gas prices across northeastern Pennsylvania have risen an estimated twelve cents from a month ago... but up eight cents from a week ago. That information contained in the latest Triple – A Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday morning. An overnight check of gas stations show... that self – serve, unleaded regular across the area shows that gas is averaging $3.88 a gallon... up two cents from Monday. However... a week ago we were paying $3.80 a gallon.... and a month ago... averaging $3.76 a gallon. If you look around... you can find gas prices a lot let expensive.... or a lot more... depending the amount of traffic around a gas station.
If you're using the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 the new few days... you may encounter a slow roll from the Lightstreet to Mifflinville interchanges. That word from PennDOT spokesman Rick Mason. The rolling road block is due to the contractor setting beams on the new westbound bridge over the Susquehanna River between Lime Ridge and Mifflinville. The work will take from 9:30 AM through 6 PM.
The Shikellamy School Board will launch a search to find a new Superintendent... now that it accepted the resignation of Robin Musto. She has been with the district since the summer of 2010... and just a month ago took a medical leave of absence. Musto's tenure has been marked with a reduction in district operations... and that has put her at odds with some board members... as well as teachers and students.
The Bloomsburg University baseball team plays Clarion in a doubleheader this afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field on the upper campus. The Huskies will take an 11-11 record into today's games while Clarion is 5 and 11. Today's first game begins at 1 o'clock.
PSU's Spring Practice
Penn State began spring football practice on Monday... and it was the first practice conducted by new head coach Bill O'Brien. The former offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, O'Brien was hired in January as the late Joe Paterno's successor.
