There is a power issues to tell you about this morning. PPL is reporting an estimated 250 subscribers are without power along Route 11... from Park Street in Bloomsburg... north to Central Road. The power in that area... made up of mainly commercial customers... went out around 3:30 this morning. The outage has taken out some traffic signals along Route 11... so please be careful driving in that area.
If you're seeing a couple of more cop cars than usual on the highways these days... it's not a figment of your imagination. Now through the end of April... officers are cracking down on aggressive driving... as well as speeding in work zones... so says Bob Schaeffer of the Pottsville – based community traffic safety project. In Columbia County... Interstate 80... as well as Routes 487 and 11 will be targeted by various agencies. The funding coming from the federal government and channeled through PennDOT.
Mahoning Township Police are still trying to determine if a 1,500 gallon diesel fuel spill along route 54 near Danville was an accident or vandalism. The incident taking place outside Leighow Oil when a valve was discovered in the “open” position on a tank. Officials say clean-up crews spent the weekend.... and are expected to spend the rest of the week cleaning up the fuel. When the spill was first reported... firefighters were able to prevent the fuel from getting into Mahoning Creek.
Masser / Hynoski
High praise for a Southern Columbia High School football standout... who did his part to get the New York Giants into the Superbowl. Henry Hynoski was recently honored by the State House in Harrisburg for his attributes... and praised by State Representative Kurt Masser who represents Columbia, Montour and Northumberland Counties. Hynoski was hired by the Giants after last summer's NFL lockout as their starting fullback... and was instrumental with getting the Giants into this year's Superbowl.
One of the highlights of the spring dining season is on tap for Wednesday night at the Moose Exchange on West Main Street in Bloomsburg. It's the annual Spaghetti dinner to benefit Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated. Merchant Tim Wagner who heads up the DBI says you can get advanced sale tickets at a lot of businesses along Main Street. Wagner says tickets for the meal are $6.00 in advance... and $7.00 the night of the event.... at the Moose Exchange at Main and Jefferson Streets.
Bloomsburg firemen were called out late last night to the upper campus of Bloomsburg University. Someone discovering smoke in the Jessica Kozloff Apartments around 11:30 Monday night. Campus security finding a florescent light ballast had failed. Firefighters taking a second look for an extension of heat with their thermal camera. The scene at the apartment complex on the upper campus cleared by midnight.
A Luzerne County court jury has found 49 – year old Arthur Stoss guilty of first degree murder. He's accused of ending the life of Lillian Calabro of Pittston and tossing her body in the Susquehanna River. Calabro's body was discovered a year ago in Kirby Park in Wilkes – Barre. This is not Stoss' first run – in with the law... he's been in and out of prison since he was convicted of sexual assault back in 1987.
Sentencing will take place at a later date.
An Allentown man has been named interim budget and finance chief for Luzerne County. 65 – year old Vic Mazziotti fills the spot of Joan Pusateri who vacated the job last week. Luzerne County manager Robert Lawton says Mazziotti will be paid $40.00 an hour... but will not receive any benefits.
A Lehigh County truck driver died Monday... after he lost control of his big rig near Brandonville... in Schuylkill County... southwest of Hazleton. Authorities say the accident took place on Route 924... as the road makes it's way to Shenandoah on a very steep descent. Investigators still don't know if the truck had some sort of mechanical failure... or the driver's lack of knowledge of the road led to the crash.
Sunoco says it plans to close its terminal near Tamaqua in the not too distant future. That has home heating oil retailers scrambling to figure out where to get their product. For many retailers... the closest terminal is in either Northumberland County... or Whitehall... near Allentown. Those retailers add... their home delivery prices in lower Luzerne County and the Tamaqua area could increase anywhere from five to twenty cents a gallon.
It was a rough weekend on the streets of Shamokin and Coal Township. Police probing five alleged assault – related incidents. The incidents left two men injured... but they were treated and released at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Meantime... 28 – year old Jason Derck of Treverton is in the Northumberland County Jail on $10,000 bail after he was arrested for an alleged dust – up while wielding a baseball bat with a man in Coal Township. Police say they're still investigating some of the incidents.
Headed someplace this week... be prepared to dig deeper into you pockets at your local gas retailer. The latest Triple A fuel Gauge report shows self – serve, unleaded regular across northeastern Pennsylvania is averaging $3.80 a gallon... up a penny from the weekend... and up six cents from a week ago. The Triple A says prices at the pump have increased fifteen cents over the past month.
The NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament resumes Tuesday night. Among the games.... Penn State at LSU.
The most coveted free agent in the history of the National Football League has made his decision. Peyton Manning has decided to sign with the Denver Broncos. That apparently leaves Tim Tebow out in the cold. No word on where Tebow may end up.

Chase Utley has left the Philadelphia Phillies spring training camp in Clearwater. He says he needs to see a specialist about his injured right knee. The five-time All-Star second baseman hasn't played in a game this spring because of a chronic knee condition that forced him to miss all of last spring and the first 46 games of the regular season.
