Ron Mull Out of Office
The Town of Bloomsburg has been without the services of its newly hired town manager for the past week. Ron Mull was escorted from the town hall a week ago. Town Council Vice – Chair Diane Levan telling us she can't comment on the issue... saying Mull is “currently out of the office for personal reasons.” In Mull's absence... Ms. Levan said the town's business is being handled by former administrator Carol Mas. Vice Chair Levan... who is subbing for Mayor Dan Knorr who is out of town... says there is NO ongoing criminal investigation. Ron Mull's last job was borough manager of Middletown... south of Harrisburg... a job he left hurriedly in mid – January. The January 18th... edition of the Patriot – News out of Harrisburg published a line where he told council members that “he believed his management style would run into conflict with council... and it was time to move on.” No word... if or when Mull will return.
Robbery / Home Invasion
A Berwick man is in the Columbia County Prison after a home invasion and armed robbery in Bloomsburg Thursday afternoon. Bloomsburg police say 17 – year old James Hughes of Berwick was a passenger in a car driven by his cousin, Abby Burd, when they drove to the Town Park Village apartment complex where they met up with 21 – year old Kody Cragle. Byrd first entering... then Hughes came in... brandished a handgun.. threatening Cragle. The pair ultimately got away... and were stopped moments later by a Main Township police officer on Route 339. Somewhere along River Hill... authorities say Hughes apparently tossed the weapon from their Dodge Neon... and now police are seeking the driver of a white Dodge coming out of the Wonderview sub – division... who may have seen Hughes throw the weapon alongside the roadway. Hughes was arraigned and is being held on $75,000 bail. Burd has not been charged.
Eight West Point cadets are trying to shake off their injuries after a van they were in rolled over Thursday night on Interstate 80 in Sugarloaf Township near Hazleton. State police say the driver of the van swerved to avoid another vehicle.... losing control... entering the median and rolling over several times. One cadet was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville... while a second was Life – flighted to Geisinger's Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
Voter ID Bill
There will be a so – called “soft roll out” of that newly signed Voter ID law in Pennsylvania next month. The law calls for voters to have a government picture identification in order to cast a ballot starting in November. Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says that “soft roll out” of the new law begins with next month's primary... when poll workers will be requesting ID.
Bob Mellow to Plead
Former State Senator Robert Mellow of Lackawanna County is expected to plead guilty to mail fraud and filing a false tax return. Those charges following a two year investigation by the feds into Mellow's activities. Authorities say Mellow allegedly committed the crimes between 2006 and 2010. He could face up to five years in prison... and fined a quarter – million dollars.
A rescue in the Susquehanna River in Wilkes – Barre of two men after their boat capsized. The incident taking place Thursday near the Veterans Memorial Bridge when the boat flipped over into the chilly river. The fire department rescuing the pair. They were treated at the scene by EMS.
A substitute Shamokin High School teacher was arraigned Thursday after he was charged by Coal Township police with sending graphic text messages to four female students last year. 23 – year old Michael Zack of Marion Heights faces a long list of charges after he allegedly sent 4,300 explicit text messages to the teens between March and October of 2011. Zack was arraigned... and then freed on $20,000 unsecured bail.
