AGAPE / Flood Recovery

It's been a long six months for residents of Bloomsburg and Columbia County following the Lee floods. Many people have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps... while others are too proud to seek help from faith – based groups such as AGAPE. The organization's Kathy Low says thus far... just over 200 households have asked for help... but Ms. Lowe believes once the weather breaks for good... the organization will see a rapid increase for help.

 

Bomb Found

An incident which began in Catawissa Township involving an old military bomb came to an end Monday night when it was blown up in a quarry. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... several men found the rear of the bomb sticking out of the ground while clearing brush along Old Reading Road. After a bomb squad from Hershey... and a military unit from Maryland checked it out... it was taken to a nearby quarry and exploded... startling residents.

 

Alleged Embezzler

A 28 – year old Millville woman has been bound over to Columbia County court... after waiving her right to a preliminary hearing on Monday. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition Ashley Houseknecht of Bottom Road is accused of allegedly pilfering accounts of patients while she worked at Millville Health Care Center. A subsequent audit finding an estimated $13,000 missing from accounts. Housekencht is charged with theft... and receiving stolen goods.. which are both felony's. She's free on her own recognizance.

 

Red Cross

American Red Cross chapters all across northeastern Pennsylvania need to collect an estimated 350 pints of blood a day. The Bloomsburg Chapter is doing it's part to fill that need by establishing a blood donation center every Tuesday at the Columbia Mall at Buckhorn. They've established a new blood donation center which is open every Tuesday starting at 8 AM.

 

Attorney / Ponzi

There are allegations flying across Luzerne County that Attorney Anthony Lupus allegedly bilked thousands of dollars out of people... money he was supposed to invest. It's the familiar Ponzi scheme. Anthony Lupas is the father of Luzerne County Judge David Lupas. Judge Lupas confirmed the investigation... and said he has notified authorities.

 

Machete Guy

A 20 – year old man believed to be the person responsible for a machete attack on a GAR High School Student in Wilkes – Barre... gave up his rights to an extradition hearing Monday in Passaic County, New Jersey. It's not known when Juan Borbon will be returned to Luzerne County to face aggravated assault charges. He's accused of nearly slicing off the hand of 15-year-old Marquis Allen last month during a fight outside the high school.

 

Hazleton Chief

Hazleton officially has a new police chief. Frank DeAndrea, Jr was administered the oath of office Monday by Mayor Joseph Yannuzzi who hand picked him for the job. During the search for a new chief... DeAndrea helped the city. But when the top candidate pulled out of consideration... Yannuzzi offered the job to DeAndrea.... who accepted. His first objective... to talk to rank and file officers who patrol the streets of Hazleton.

 

St. Monica's School

The 62 – year old St. Monica School in Sunbury will close at the end of the academic year. Administrators citing rising operating costs... parish debt and an uncertain economic environment for making their decision. It comes only a couple of weeks after a visit to St. Monica by Bishop Joseph McFadden of the Harrisburg Diocese. The last class will be held May 31st.

 

Sex Charges

A 23 – year old Northumberland county man is facing child sex charges. Joe White of Sunbury is believed to have sexually assaulted two 14 – year old girls. The teen telling authorities that White knew how old they were.. but had sex with them anyway.

Danville Boys' BB

The Danville Ironmen's 2011-12 basketball season came to a close Tuesday night as they lost 45-36 after putting up an excellent fight against traditional powerhouse Holy Ghost Prep. The Danville boys finish with a 23 & 3 record - and a school record 23 game winning streak after that Class AAA second round state playoff game. NCAA

The NCAA Division one men's basketball tournament officially starts on Thursday, but there are two play-in games Tuesday night in Dayton Ohio. Western Kentucky plays Mississippi Valley State and Brig-ham Young faces Iona.
