Shickshinny Flooding Folo
Six months ago residents and businesses in Shickshinny... in Luzerne County... were cleaning mud from their homes and stores following the flooding produced by tropical storm Lee. Since September... some of the town has bounced back... such as a hardware store... and a near by floral shop... as well as a convenience store. Still missing... a bank and a grocery store.
Gas Prices / County
With the cost of gasoline in the mid - $3.70 level... Columbia County officials are doing their part to save money with the County's car fleet. One of their targets is the Sheriff's Department which requires a lot of hustling to get inmates from the prison to either district justice offices in the region... or even driving across the state. But Commissioner David Kovach says... in some cases... the department has turned to video conferencing in order to keep prisoners in house... and county employees not far from their work assignments.
Remembering entertainer Davy Jones over the weekend... at a former church he bought in Beavertown in Snyder County.... near a horse farm he owned. Hundreds of folks showing up Saturday to pay their respects. Jones was a part of the made for TV group the Monkee's. He died two weeks ago at a second home he had in Florida.
A state police fire marshal is trying to figure out what caused a blaze which destroyed one home... and damaged two others in Shenandoah early Sunday morning. The fire breaking out in the 300 block of West Columbus Street. Authorities say Christopher Rovinski is in the Lehigh Valley Hospital after suffering burns to his face, hands and feet. Everyone else got out safely.
Still no suspects in the early Sunday morning stabbing of a Kingston man. Authorities say the incident happened on Pringle Street. One investigator says a man was stabbed... and the person they're looking for fled the scene. No motive is given in the attack... and police say the victims injuries aren't life – threatening.
That boil water advisory put into effect for Beaver Meadows... south of Hazleton... has been lifted. It was first put into place last week when crews found a water main break. Since that time... residents had to boil their water before consuming. The advisory was lifted when lab tests showed the water was safe to drink.
The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests begin Monday. They're used to measure a student's attainment of academic standards... while determining the efficiency of school programs. Under the plan kids in grades 3 through 8th... and grade 11 are assessed in reading and math. Students in fifth, eighth and 11th grades are checked for writing... while kids in grades 4, 8 and 11 are assessed in science.
The 62 – year old St. Monica School in Sunbury will close at the end of the academic year. Administrators citing rising operating costs... parish debt and an uncertain economic environment for making their decision. It comes only a couple of weeks after a visit to St. Monica by Joseph McFadden... the Bishop of the Harrisburg Diocese. The last class will be held May 31st.
High School Basketball
The Danville boys are the only area basketball team still alive in the post season playoffs. On Friday night, the Ironmen beat Scranton Prep 63-50 to advance to the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs. Tuesday night Danville faces Holy Ghost Prep at Milton Hershey High School. Weekend High School Action
On Saturday both the Southern Columbia boys and the Danville girls saw their seasons come to an end. Southern Columbia losing to Holy Cross and Danville falling to Allentown Central Catholic.
BU Women's Basketball
In college basketball Friday night, one of the best seasons in the history of the women's program at Bloomsburg University came to an end with the Huskies losing to IUP 77-76 in a first round NCAA game. Bloomsburg finished the season with a 26 and 6 record.
High School Wrestling
Five area athletes won state medals as the high school wrestling season concluded Saturday in Hershey. Central Columbia's Kurt Meske finished third at 160 pounds. Three Benton wrestlers won 4th place medals: Matt Welliver at 113 pounds, Colt Cotten at 132 pounds... and Jake Mankey at 182 pounds. Jeric Kasunic of Benton took 5th place at 152 pounds. Benton finished 4th in the state in the team competition.
