Columbia County Chief Assessor David Good has been one of the busiest department heads in local government these days. Good been assessing flood damaged homes from owners seeking a lower tax rate. He says of the 2 to 3 hundred homes he's checked.... an estimated 95% of the owners have received relief. The final day to seek reassessment is Friday.
We're roughly six weeks away from casting ballots in the April 24th primary election in Pennsylvania. On the Republican side... the only voting is in the presidential primary.... while the Democrats have a primary contest for the 109th district house seat. Whatever the case... there is one important date to remember... so says Columbia County chief registrar Matt Rapasky... is March 26th. That is the final day to register to vote... change parties... or get your paperwork in order. You can stop by the Courthouse Annex on Main Street in Bloomsburg to make the changes.
Still no suspects yet in the assault and robbery of a man... in a wooded area near the Bloomsburg University campus. The incident happened around 5:30 Sunday morning when a woman asked a man to help her find her cell phone in a wooded area. The victim went to the area... and was assaulted by at least four other men... who robbed him of $20. If you have information about the assault and robbery... call Bloomsburg Police.
Firemen Called Out
Bloomsburg firemen were called out shortly after six Monday night. An automatic alarm was set off by smoke at the former Hotel Magee on West Main Street. The reason.... a burned grilled cheese sandwich. Firemen were back in their headquarters on Market Street within minutes.
A traffic trouble spot all this week on Interstate 80... between the Berwick and Mifflinville interchanges. PennDOT says the contractor building the new I-80 westbound bridge will continue setting beams in place Tuesday. The project began last week... and the beam setting will require rolling roadblocks in the eastbound lane from Lightstreet to Mifflinville. Traffic on Old Berwick Road in South Centre Township may be effected as well. The work continues through Thursday.
Nine people were taken to the hospital Monday... including a mother and her toddler... following a three car crash in West Hazleton. The accident happened at the corner of West Broad and Fifth Streets when a car... struck two cars stopped at a light on West Broad. Police say the driver of the car that started it all was driving too fast in a construction zone.
Still no word as to what caused a fire in the rectory at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Nanticoke Sunday. The blaze broke out during the 11 O'clock mass. Sexton's wife and eight kids made it out of the rectory safely. Now... donations are being taken for Father Adam Sexton's family at the Advantage Trust Credit Union on South Main Street in Nanticoke.
A Plymouth woman... in Luzerne County.... is jailed after she allegedly stabbed her boyfriend over the weekend. Carla Santos allegedly stabbed Stephen Hollman... in the chest... with a kitchen knife. He was found in the home bleeding. Hollman was taken to a hospital for treatment of non life – threatening wounds. Court papers say the incident took place while six kids were inside the East Main Street home.
BU Women's Basketball
The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team will face a familiar opponent in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Friday night in Edinboro. The Huskies will play IUP for the third time this season. The Crimson Hawks defeated the Huskies by five points on December 3rd in Indiana. The Huskies won their PSAC semifinal meeting by 8 points last Friday in Edinboro. This Friday's Bloomsburg-IUP game tips off at 8:30 PM. High School Basketball
The Danville boys basketball team lost their first two games of the season, and they have not lost since. The Ironmen will take a 22 game winning streak into their Class Triple A first round state playoff game against Scranton Prep. The Cavaliers will bring an 18-7 record into the game that will be played Friday night at Shamokin High School.
