Locust Twp PD Crackdown
Locust Township Police... on Columbia County's South Side... are in their final weekend of aggressively enforcing Pennsylvania's traffic laws. Chief Allen Breach telling me their one area of concentration is Route 487... which stretches from Catawissa to the Northumberland County line. Chief Breach says his officers are looking for aggressive drivers, but seat belt violations as well.
Potts Grove Fire
One person was injured in a Thursday afternoon fire at a automotive repair shop in Potts Grove... in Northumberland County... just west of the Montour County line. Investigators are expected to be at the scene Friday along Route 642 to figure out what sparked the blaze. But, it's believe the fire started in a service bay... and spread quickly. The injured worker was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Shickshinny Six Months Later
No time is a good time to be a victim of a flood. Many of us went through that six months ago... and many of us have bounced back... including Wayne Wolfe and his wife who owns Shickshinny's only hardware store on West Union Street. Wolfe telling WHLM News he was in the middle of remodeling his store when the Susquehanna River flooded the one square – mile borough due to Tropical Storm Lee. Wolfe's hardware store... a floral shop... as well as a restaurant and a convenience store have bounced back in Shickshinny.... but the town's main bank will soon be gone.... as well as a large supermarket.
Sandusky Allegations
Prosecutors on Thursday.... outlined allegations against former Penn State Assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. In court papers.. prosecutors Sandusky allegedly sexually abused boy ranging in age from 8 to 17... eight were molested on the Penn State campus. The 68 – year old Sandusky remains free... under house arrest at his State College – area home. His trial is set to begin in Centre County Court in mid – May.
State Unemployment
The Department of Labor & Industry is out with the latest statewide unemployment data. The statewide unemployment rate now stands at 7.6%. That's down one-tenth of a percentage point from the revised December figures. The resident employment and unemployed residents numbers both fell in January, though the state did add 8,900 goods producing jobs for the month. Pennsylvania's job count is up by more than 37,000 compared to this time last year. Pennsylvania's jobless rate has been at or below the US rate for 62-straight months.
Machete Suspect
A second teen... believed involved in that macheteattack outside a Wilkes-Barre high school has been captured. 16 – year old Juan Borbon was arrested in Passaic County, New Jersey. Police say Borbon was involved in that attack on a GAR High School student in which that teen nearly lost his hand in the attack. The altercation is believed to have been racially motivated. Now... authorities are trying to get Borbon returned to Luzerne County.
Ground Breaking
Ground has been broken on the Wilkes University campus for a 35 – million dollar science center. It will not only be used by students... but will be linked to area hospitals and the Commonwealth Medical College. The building expected to be completed in the fall of 2013.
Sentencing
Two men convicted of murder Thursday in a 2010 shooting in West Hazleton will be spending the rest of their lives in prison. Isiah Garrett and his brother Izel were sentenced in the December 2010 death of 30 – year old Abdul Shabazz. The brothers were found guilty of second degree murder late last year.
WHLM Sports
Bloomsburg University
The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team extended their winning streak to twelve games after they beat IUP 75-67 in the PSAC Semifinals Friday night. The Huskies move on to the championship to play Edinboro, who beat West Chester in their game 74-58. Coverage on the WHLM stations and here at WHLM.com starts with the pregame show at 6:40.
High School Basketball
In high school basketball, the Danville boys and girls basketball teams played District 4 Class AAA championship games Friday night. The Danville girls lost to Shamokin 34-31. The boys beat Shikellamy 62-36.

Southern Columbia Boys
The Southern Columbia boys take on Loyalsock at Milton Saturday night at 6 O'clock in the District 4 Class AA final.
BU Wrestling
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team will compete in the EWL championships this Sunday at Clarion.
High School Wrestling
A number of area high school wrestlers will compete in the Northeast Regional which begin Friday night at Williamsport High School.
