There was a scare at the Old Science Hall on the Bloomsburg University campus Wednesday. Shortly after 2 O'clock... Town firemen rushed to the campus... where there was some smoke... but no fire... according to fire chief Bob Rupp. The chief telling us someone grinding on metal created a lot of smoke... setting off alarms. Students in the building were evacuated for a short time... but within thirty minutes... it was business as usual in the old science hall on the BU Campus..
The 14 state owned universities made their case before the state Senate Appropriations Committee as budget hearings continued in Harrisburg. State schools... such as Bloomsburg University... have had a target on their backs during the past two budget years. John Cavanaugh of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, says it's not just the level of the cuts but the speed at which they're happening. Cavanaugh telling state senators.... he can't say yet how tuition will be affected if the budget cuts continue.
There are a lot of volunteer expected to work along the banks of Fishing Creek near Orangeville Saturday... trying to clean up a stretch of the waterway from Char Mund Road... to the Route 487 bridge north of the Borough. It's all due to the floods of September. Organizer Rachel Strausser says the project is taking on a life of it's own. Registration begins the lot at Char Mund Road and Route 487 in Orange Township Saturday morning at 7:30.
US Representative Tom Marino has announced that the US Department of Transportation that Lycoming County has been given a $2.4 - million grant to replace the Lycoming Valley Railroad Bridge. The structure spans Loyalsock Creek... but it was badly damaged during the floods of September. Prior to the floods... the bridge carried an estimated 25,000 rail cars a year serving Newberry Yard in Williamsport... as well as a freight intermodal facility at the Montoursville Airport.
Red Cross Heroes
The American Red Cross Chapters in Bloomsburg, Berwick and Danville are looking for heroes to honor during a breakfast in May. Kathleen Nihoff of the Berwick Chapter says they looking for special people. Nominations will be taken until the close of business on Friday.... and the awards will be given out May 18th during a breakfast on the Bloomsburg University campus.
Snyder County residents are mourning the passing of entertainer Davy Jones... a member of the 60's TV band the Monkee's. Jones died yesterday in South Florida. Although he had a home in Indiantown, Florida.... he kept a main residence at a farm near Beavertown. And he had purchased a former church... hoping to turn it into an entertainment center and museum. No word on funeral services for Davy Jones.
If your a subscriber to UGI Penn Natural Gas... you'll be seeing smaller bills in the future. The change will effect those who receive gas service in Columbia and Montour Counties. The company announcing that customers will see rates go down an estimated 4.5 %. The reason... lower wholesale natural gas costs thanks to the Marcellus shale fields.
Luzerne County Manager
Luzerne County has a new Chief Executive. Robert Lawton comes from California to become the county's first manager under home rule. His first order of business laying off up to 65 county workers... in order to close a budget gap. Those firings could come as early as today.
A 35 - year old Plains Township woman has waived her right to a preliminary hearing after charged with taking nearly $131,000 from her former employer. Denise Zbierski faces a host of charges after confessing to police she pocketed the money from the MotorWorld Auto Group in Wilkes-Barre. Zbierski was a former payroll administrator... telling authorities she made off with the money due to a gambling problem... and to pay down credit card debt. She remains free on bail.
A homeless man is in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility after he was charged with taking a car in West Hazleton. 24 – year old Raymond Witkowski is accused of making off with a car... and taking it to a Hazle Township campsite where he was living. While in possession of the car... Witkowski used a credit card he found. He's jailed on $10,000 bail.
A former Boy Scout troop treasurer from Danville... is headed to court following a preliminary hearing this week. 44 – year old Tracey Lee Myers has been charged by Danville police with the theft of $4,000 from Scout Troop 37. Myers has admitted that she falsified numbers in the scout's checkbook... as well as on expense reports. She remains free on $20,000 bail.
There is no change in the start of the trial of Jerry Sandusky. He's the former Penn State Assistant Football coach accused of sexually molesting 10 boys over a 15 – year period of time. Sandusky's attorney had wanted it pushed back to July... but a Centre County judge ruled that the start date remains May 14th.
BU Men's Basketball
The successful seasons of the Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams did not go unnoticed by the PSAC. The men's team won three major awards announced Wednesday. Sophomore Donthe Jordan was named the PSAC Eastern Division athlete of the year; senior Larry Webster was the defensive player of the year, and John Sanow was the coach of the year. Jordan was a first team all conference selection while Webster made the second team.
BU Women's Basketball
From the women's team... senior Kelsey Gallagher was named the Eastern Division athlete of the year for the second straight season. Gallagher and junior Dana Weiller were first team all conference selections while junior Kayla Oxenrider was a second team pick. The women's team plays IUP Friday at 5:30 in the PSAC semifinals at Edinboro. High School Boys Basketball
In boys basketball Wednesday night, in a Class Double A semifinal... Loyalsock downed South Williamsport 58 to 40. Southern Columbia will now face Loyalsock in the final at a date, site, and time to be determined. In the boys Triple A final Friday night Danville takes on Shikellamy at Milton at 8 o'clock.
