Shickshinny Flood Recovery

Six months after the floods of September... Shickshinny is adapting. During a meeting Tuesday night plans were unveiled calling for businesses to move to higher ground on West Union Street... getting away from the flood plain. That... after the federal government told Shickshinny borough officials they don't plan to build a levee system along the Susquehanna. Meantime... the Wells Fargo Bank at Union and Main Street is expected to be demolished this week.

 

Bloomsburg Community Development

A final public hearing on the proposed use of federal Community Development Block Grant dollars for the Town of Bloomsburg is scheduled for April 23rd. How to allocate the estimated $152,000 surfaced during this week's council meeting. One of the projects that could use the money is the Streater Recreation Area on Ft. McClure Boulevard. SEDA – COG's Bill Lowthert says plans call for the money to be earmarked for roads... parking and preliminary grading of the area. Other Block Grant dollars are proposed for street lighting improvement... a town park restroom rebuild... as well as a curbing and sidewalk planning study.

 

Luzerne Jobs

Layoff slips are going out by the end of the week in Luzerne County... as up to sixty-five people will be told they're losing their jobs due to budget cuts. That word comes from interim County Manager Tom Pribula during a Luzerne County Commission meeting last night. In all... the layoffs will save the county an estimated 2.7- million dollars in salaries and benefits. The action is in addition to increasing property taxes two percent.

 

PennDOT Cleanup

As soon as the weather turns more towards spring... you'll be seeing more and more volunteers along the state's highway's cleaning up the trash left behind. PennDOT says the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania begins Thursday... and in the agency's District Three office out of Montoursville is doing its part... according to PennDOT's Jamie Legenos. Statewide... according to Legenos... 159,000 volunteers collected 7 – million pounds of trash along 13,000 miles of roadway.

 

Transportation

As lawmakers are growing restless on the transportation funding issue... many options remain on the table. Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch telling reporters in Harrisburg this week, how Governor Corbett's no tax pledge may impact the transportation funding debate. One option... according to Schoch... is a fuel tax swap... uncapping the oil franchise tax while temporarily reducing the gas tax.

 

Guilty Plea

A 22 – year old Bloomsburg man has pleaded guilty in the sexual assault of a 16 - year old girl in a wooded area of Mt. Carmel Township back in 2010. Kenneth Mull the Third... also known as “Sammy” and “Skitz” was sentenced to five to ten years in state prison by a Northumberland County Judge. Mull... who's last known address was the Stone Castle Motel on Route 11... remains in the Columbia County Prison on a theft charge.

 

Animal Cruelty Alleged

A Millville woman is now facing a cruelty to animals charge after remains of a horse were found on her property earlier this month. Pennsylvania State Police at Bloomsburg telling us 50 – year old Bonnie Elaine Heddings of Pine Tree Road in Millville is facing the cruelty charges. Police say the charges were filed after a horse carcass remained on her property for more than a week... and a second horse was underweight... and after examined by a vet... has to be put down.

 

Hazleton Fire

Hazleton firemen made quick work of a small blaze which erupted Tuesday at a home in the 200 hundred block of East Mine Street. Investigators say towels brushing up against a hot light bulb sparked the blaze. Firemen simply had to remove the towels from the door and tossed them. The door was removed from its hinges and the fire on top of it extinguished.

 

Rep. Marino

U.S. Representative Tom Marino joined three other congressmen Wednesday to talk about the newly – formed Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth. Marino represents Montour County in Washington. Representative Marino says the caucus is committed to protection and promoting the welfare of the more than 420,000 children and youth in the nation's foster care system.

Bloomsburg University

The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played PSAC quarterfinal games last night at Nelson Field House. In the women's game.. Bloomsburg defeated Shippensburg 69 to 61... while in the men's contest... West Chester got by Bloomsburg 83 to 70.

 

High School Basketball

In the District 4 high school basketball playoffs last night, there was a doubleheader at Williamsport High School. In the first game, a girls Class Triple A semifinal.. Danville defeated Athens 29 to 24... The second game was a boys Class AA semifinal... Southern Columbia just got by Athens 44 to 42.
