If you're a flood victim... and you pay Columbia County property taxes... you have roughly a week and a half to get your property reassessed. That word from Columbia County Commissioner David Kovach. He says if your property has sustained major damage from September flooding.... there is a good possibility that your assessment can be reduced for the 2011 – 2012 tax year.

Penn State University has been under the gun since last fall regarding the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal. Sandusky... a former assistant football coach... is accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15 – year period of time. But who is paying for the university's legal bills ??? Penn State says the University maintains insurance policies which are expected to cover claims brought against the school and its officers.
Volunteer firemen from Montour Township... Buckhorn and Catawissa were called out shortly after 2 O'clock Monday morning for a report of a house fire on Legion Road... off of Rupert Drive. But despite an intense search of the area.... nothing was found. All were back in quarters a short time later.
An ex – Danville Police officer is dead... apparently taking his own life after he was charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a 16 – year old girl in Snyder County. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition.... 68 – year old Richard Lewis was apparently on his way to surrender to State Police... when he stopped at a rest area in Liberty Township and ended it all. Lewis had been held in high regard as he served on the Danville Police force for 21 – years... retiring in 2001.
State police are trying to figure out the connection between the death of a couple in the Pocono's and a man who took his own life in the couple's car along Route 61 in nearby Coal Township. Police say 30 – year old Greg Demage of Jim Thorpe was found inside the car... dead of an apparent self – inflicted gunshot wound following a high speed pursuit. Now authorities are trying to figure out of Demage had anything to do with the deaths of 77 – year old John Carnochan... and his 75 – year old wife, Mildred. Both were found dead in their Split Rock Resort home in Carbon County Saturday afternoon.
Court Upholds Columbia County Ruling
The State's Commonwealth Court has backed a ruling made two years ago by the Columbia County Court that set fair values for those who have condemned property in Centralia. The seven residents who live there contend that condemnation proceedings against them should stop... saying the mine fire... which began back in 1962... has moved to another location... and air quality in Centralia... has improved. The ruling is the latest step in a lengthy court battle by the Centralia Seven to remain in their homes despite eminent domain procedure... and the $42 – million federal dollars set aside for relocation.
SUV vs Cruiser
A 22 – year old Bloomsburg man has been cited by Pennsylvania State Police for failing to drive in the proper lane... after his SUV collided with a police cruiser in North Centre Township at the start of the weekend. Police say the SUV driven by Nickolas Eckroth was northbound... when for some unknown reason collided with a Briar Creek Township police car driven by 34 – year old Randy Gaugler. Both drivers slightly injured in the crash... and were treated at Geisinger Medical Center.
There was a drug sweep in Hazleton over the weekend. Police say five men were taken into custody Saturday. Authorizes raiding three homes on North Church Street... West Oak and West Maple. All are in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility

The regular season ended Saturday with victories.... and both the Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams will be at home to start the PSAC playoffs Tuesday night. The women play Shippensburg at 5:30 and the men face West Chester at 7:30. District 4 Playoffs
The Danville and Southern Columbia boys' and the Danville girls' are the three area high school basketball teams still alive in the District 4 playoffs. Tuesday night at Williamsport High School, the Danville girls play Athens followed by the Southern Columbia boys against Athens. Both of those games are District semifinals. The Danville boys will play Shikellamy in the Class AAA final later in the week at a time, date, and site to be determined.
Four area high school wrestlers finished first in the District 4 wrestling championships at Williamsport over the weekend. Winning gold medals were Colt Cotten of Benton at 132 pounds, Kurt Meske of Central Columbia at 160, Jake Mankey of Benton at 182 and Eric McCraken of Central Columbia at 220 pounds. Central Columbia finished second to Mifflinburg in the team competition.
