Two Berwick families will pick up the pieces of their lives after a Wednesday fire extensively damaged their double home at 421 and 423 East Eighth Street. Fire Chief Bill Coolbaugh says the blaze began when one of the renters left grease on a stove... and from there... the fire spread. Chief Coolbaugh says nine members of two families were left homeless.
Drivers coming out of the Southern Columbia school complex Wednesday afternoon got a friendly reminder from Locust Township Police. Wear you seat belt. Bob Shaeffer with the North Central Highway Safety Network says new seat belt laws became effective late last year... and they affect teens.
The over population of unwanted and homeless animals has been the focus of a group known as PA Pets for the past 25 – years or so. Jo Wright of Bloomsburg says the group trying to do something about the problem.... such as offering low cost spay and neutering.
A former employee of MotorWorld in Wilkes – Barre is accused of taking more than $130,000 from the dealership over a year's period of time. Authorities say 35 – year old Denise Zbiersky told them she needed the money for a gambling habit... and to pay off credit cards. Zbiersky had easy access to the money... since she worked in the payroll department of the dealership... adding thousands of dollars a month to her paycheck. She faces a preliminary hearing next week.
A 20 – year old youth street hockey coach from Freeland... has been arrested by Luzerne County Detectives. 20 - year old David Kish, Jr... is accused of downloading dozens of kiddie porn images on his computer. Detectives say there is no evidence that any of the images are of local kids. Kish is free on $25,000 bail.
The Hazleton Area School district will have a news superintendent come early August. Francis Antonelli... now the acting superintendent will continue on the job... but given the new title. Antonelli was named acting Superintendent late last year... when the board bought out the contract of then – super Samuel Marolo.
A PA Senate Republican leader says he expects the state's April 24th primary to be held using boundaries based on the the year 2000 census data. Earlier this year the Pennsylvania Supreme Court tossed out districts drawn up by the General Assembly based on the 2010 census. The expected eventual decision came during a five minute meeting of the Legislative Reapportionment Commission in Harrisburg.
Gus is Gone
Gus the Groundhog is headed for the unemployment line... fired by the Pennsylvania Lottery commission. Gus has been billed as the second most famous groundhog in the state... and has been the face of the commission's TV ad campaign since 2004. Lottery officials hope to unveil a new marketing campaign next month... aimed at making people more aware of everything the lottery does.
Shamokin Rail Traffic
An increase of rail traffic through Shamokin... in Northumberland County... is prompting the upgrade to rail crossings. Work has been wrapped on new traffic warning signals along Walnut Street by the North Shore Railroad out of Northumberland on their Shamokin Valley Line. Increased rail traffic is expected over the next couple of years with some of it destined for Timber End on Route 901 in Coal Township.
Bloomsburg University Basketball
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams played East Stroudsburg last night at Nelson Field House. In a game you heard on the WHLM Stations... the Bloomsburg men forced East Stroudsburg into overtime... eventually winning the game 80 to 78. Earlier in the evening...the Bloomsburg women defeated East Stroudsburg 78 to 63. The Huskies close out the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against Millersville.
High School Basketball
In high school basketball Wednesday night, in a District 4 Class AA girls quarterfinal at the McCloskey Center in Danville... South Williamsport defeated Southern Columbia 62 to 45. The second game of that doubleheader at Danville was a boys Class AA first round game... Southern just getting by Central Columbia 50 to 47.
