Some power outages across the region Monday afternoon as two major electrical lines caught fire at Ferry and Ft. McClure Boulevard in Bloomsburg. The lines fell to the roadway and sparked a small grass fire... necessitating the Bloomsburg Fire Department. Chief Bob Rupp says PPL crews were pretty quick to get there... with an estimated 900 subscribers without juice for a couple of hours.
Seat Belt Enforcement
The Locust Township Police Department kicks off a seat belt enforcement campaign Wednesday afternoon at the Southern Columbia High School. Chief Allen Breach says It's all designed to get those who don't buckle up to do so... on one of the most busy highways on the county's south side. The Chief also says his department will then spend the next week cracking down on aggressive driving and speeding.
A new report calls into question women's health care at county prisons. The two year study from the ACLU concludes that Pennsylvania's county prisons are not meeting the health care needs of women inmates. The study's author, Carol Petraitis came up with a revelation known to many... that prisons are built for men... and not women.
A cut in oil production by Saudi Arabia... and unrest in the straight of Hormuz is pushing gas prices through the roof across Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Triple A's Fuel Gauge report out Tuesday morning shows the average price for self – serve, unleaded regular is $3.67 a gallon. That's up two cents from Monday... and up six cents from a week ago.
Police are looking for an arsonist who struck over the weekend in Schuylkill County. The latest target... a fire in the 400 block of Auburn. The fire began on the porch of the home. This is the second arson fire in Auburn this month.
Bus / SUV
A Hazleton City Transit Bus and an SUV collided Monday... with five people taken to the hospital. Police says it all happened at North Laurel and West Green. Investigators say the SUV failed to yield the right of way to the city bus.
U.S. Senator Bob Casey said flood levees in the Wyoming Valley are sound, but they did sustain damage during the floods of last September.... and they need to be repaired. Casey spent Monday at the levee near the Forty Fort Cemetery. The Scranton - native says he'll send a letter to the US army Corps of Engineers... to make sure repairs are made before another high water event.
It's going to be a few more days until officials determine if bones found in a Loomis Street lot in Wilkes – Barre are animal or human. Whatever the case W-B PD and a deputy Luzerne County coroner found a dozen bone fragments Monday. Authorities were called to the lot on Loomis... near Stanton... when someone found the bones.
High School Basketball
The District 4 high school basketball playoffs got underway Tuesday night. The Bloomsburg boys met Towanda in a Class AA first round game at Sulllivan County High School. Both teams came into the match with records of 15 and 7. Bloomsburg's Zach Marosic sent the game into overtime but Towanda came out on top 52-45 in OT. Kutztown's dramatic last second shot that beat the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team on Saturday got a lot of play on ESPN, and Monday it was named the best play of the entire weekend.
The Huskies will try to bounce back from that loss when they take on East Stroudsburg tomorrow night at Nelson Field House. The doubleheader starts with the women's game at 5:30. Hear both games on the WHLM stations starting with the pregame show at 5:10.
