Could we see a parking garage in downtown Bloomsburg during the next couple of years. It's an idea which has been kicked around since the mid - 2000... but it surfaced once again during a recent Bloomsburg Town Council meeting. Fred Gaffney is the president of the Columbia – Montour County Chamber of Commerce he says the development of student housing has only increased the demand for parking. Mayor Dan Knorr said he's like to see a study undertaken to make sure a parking garage is the right thing to do.
Route 11 Crash
Three people were hurt and taken to a local hospital following a car crash early Monday morning near the Berwick exit of Interstate 80... in South Center Township. The accident happened shortly after midnight. Police are continuing their investigation.
An Atlas man is hospitalized after demolishing his SUV late Friday night along Route 54 at Airport Road... near Elysburg. Police say 41 – year old Robert Broat was taken to the Geisinger Medical Center after losing control of his 2001 Ford... which rolled over. Broat was taken to Geisinger by Elysburg Ambulance.
Locust Twp Police
The Locust Township Police Department to be out and about this week.... and all the way through March 4th conducting a seat belt enforcement. In a news release issued by Chief Allen Breach... Officers will be at the Southern Columbia High School on Wednesday... handing out pamphlets to drivers dealing with seat belt safety. Then... officers to be conducting traffic enforcement details across the township through March 4th.
A surprising e-mail from Shikellamy School District Superintendent Robin Musto to members of the school board over the weekend. Musto says she's taking a leave of absence to at least March 19th... due to medical issues. The move has left the board in the dark. However... at their meeting this Thursday... the board is expected to land on the shoulder's of business manager Dave Sinopoli
Non - Union Workers
For the past four years... the salaries of the state's non – union workers have been frozen... and Budget Secretary Charles Zogby says their in for a little bump in their paychecks... equal to that called for in state union contracts. Zogby telling the State Senate appropriations committee that overall Governor Corbett's proposed 2012 – 2013 budget would eliminate an estimated 650 positions from state government... primary through vacancies.
Hazle Twp Fire
An early Sunday evening fire brought Hazle Township firefighters to the Penn Terrace Motel on Route 93 South near Beaver Meadows. The small blaze began in an electrical ballast on one of the room... but it was quickly put out by a guest using an extinguisher. But the flames got into the ceiling and roof... but that was squelched by firemen. No one was injured.
Thieves were busy over the weekend at a Luzerne County men's club. Police in Plymouth said someone broke into the Carousel Lounge on Route 11 early Sunday morning... making off with an estimated $2,000 in cash from a lock box. No one knows who did it... and Plymouth police are asking for your help in trying to solve the burglary.
Central Columbia won the team title in the District 4 East Sectional wrestling tournament which concluded Saturday in Hughesville. The Blue Jays are advancing eleven wrestlers to the District 4 championships which begin Friday at Williamsport High School.
High School Basketball
Seven area high school basketball teams will compete in the District 4 playoffs which begin this week. Tuesday night... the Bloomsburg boys play Towanda at Sullivan County High School. On Wednesday night, in a double header at the Whitey McCloskey Center in Danville, the Southern Columbia girls play South Williamsport in the first game... and the Southern Columbia boys play Central Columbia in the second game. On Thursday night, the Benton girls play Cowanesque Valley at Troy. On Friday night, both the Danville boys and girls teams play at Shikellamy High School in Sunbury- the girls play Montoursville in the first game... and the boys play Shamokin in the nightcap.
