I – 80 Wreck
A trucker received minor injures when he lost control of his 18 – wheeler on I-80 near the Lightstreet exit and overturned. The accident happening around 1:15 Friday morning. Pennsylvania State Police at Bloomsburg telling us the wreck was confined to the median... with the interstate remaining opening during the investigation.
Three people were taken to the Berwick Hospital following a two car crash in the 1000 block of Walnut Street Thursday afternoon. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Friday's edition.. Christopher DeLuca of Berwick was northbound... when for some unknown reason... he collided head – on with a mini – van. DeLuca was treated and released in the hospital's emergency room... as were the two women who were in the mini – van.
Funeral services will be held Friday at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Elysburg for James and Patricia Rosini... and William Rosini. All three were killed in a car accident near Everglades City, Florida last week. Meantime, visitation and a funeral service for 59 – year old Deborah Korbich of Elysburg... also killed in the crash... will be held Saturday at the James Kelley Funeral Home in Coal Township.
The Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomsburg will be busy Saturday... as they hold their 63rd annual Spaghetti Dinner. A couple of hundred people usually make their way to the church's basement. One of the organizers says the money raised is used for church activities. The 63rd annual Spaghetti Dinner from the Men of the Wesley United Methodist Church kicks off Saturday morning at 11 O'clock.
WHLM Radio... as well as the Bloomsburg Fire Department were honored Thursday night by Elks Lodge 436 on Old Berwick Road. Lodge officials recognizing WHLM and the fire department's chief Bob Rupp for work preformed during Tropical Storm Lee last September. WHLM remaining on the air... informing residents of Columbia and Montour Counties as to flood conditions... while the fire department putting in thousands of hours of manpower to insure residents of the town were safe... as well as evacuated from areas of high water.
Luzerne County Sheriff
The sheriff of neighboring Luzerne County will be without a job come March 1st. Sheriff John Gilligan will be on an island of his own... a causality of the County's $122 million budget approved this week by County Commissioners. The 61 – year old Gilligan is one of an estimated 50 county employees who will eventually let go in order to make ends meet. Interim County Manager Tom Pribula has not appointed anyone to replaced.
Security Guard Suspended
A Luzerne County man has been charged with making a statement under penalty. 56 – year old Kenneth Leon Holley.. a security guard working for Luzerne County and as a Wilkes – Barre constable is off the job without pay. Authorities said Holley did not put on his application he made to the county in the mid – 90's... that he had been charged with receiving stolen property in Passaic County, New Jersey back in 1975.
A Schuylkill County man is in jail... charged with child abuse and aggravated assault. Peter Howard is accused of abusing his two month old son so badly... the child suffered a heart attack. Our news partner... Newswatch 16... is reporting the incident happened in September. Howard telling the child mother... he accidentally sat on the infant. He is currently jailed on a quarter – million dollars bond.
A man with no permanent address is behind bars... wanted by three municipalities for convenience store robberies over the past month. 18 – year old Tysheed Laron Hargove is accused of stick-up's in Carbon County.. Tamaqua.. and along Route 940 in Foster Township in Schuylkill County. He also lead police on a high speed chase moments before being captured. He's being held in the Schuylkill County Jail.
The Bloomsburg University wrestling team will close out its regular season Friday night when it travels to Lock Haven to face the Bald Eagles in an Eastern Wrestling League match-up. A win for Bloomsburg over Lock Haven would be the 16th of the season and would tie for the second-most wins in a season in school history.
Girls HS Basketball
In girls high school basketball Thursday night... Holy Redeemer defeated Berwick 46 to 20.. and Bucktail got by Millville 49 to 29.
Boys HS Basketball
In boys basketball Friday night, in a match-up of two Heartland Conference champions, Southern Columbia beat Bloomsburg in the closing game of the regular season. The final was 46-37 Southern. Listen to the details from the night's action with Jim Doyle in the WHLM Friday Night Sports Update:
A big game Saturday afternoon for the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team. The Huskies play at Kutztown. They enter the contest with a one game lead over Kutztown and East Stroudsburg in the PSAC East. The doubleheader starts with the women's game at 1 O'clock.
