Could downtown Bloomsburg see a parking garage in it's future? The issue surfaced during this week's Town Council meeting... with Tim Wagner of Downtown Bloomsburg, Incorporated telling council his group is behind the concept. After Wagner made his remarks... council members saying there is are no plans or engineering specs. The parking garage idea is purely conceptual... but could come to fruition if a study is undertaken.
The plans have been on the board since last summer. The development of the Streater Field Master Site Plan... and this week Bloomsburg Town Council giving the proposal they're okay. Bill Lowthert of SEDA – COG says the plan is original... except for just a few changes... such as relocating a football field. That field... along with a couple of of soccer fields... as well as a baseball diamond will eventually grace the property at the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek.
Day Care Worker
A former worker at a Danville Daycare Center is charged with theft... after allegedly giving hefty discounts at the Busy Little Beavers Day Center to her seven grandchildren. Since 2009... Karen Kruleski gave her grand kids a 50% discount... which she was allowed to do. However, Kruleski gave them a little more... allegedly a 75% discount. That's added up to an estimated $16,000 loss for business owner Jennifer Enterline. She says not having that money has placed her business into a financial bind.
Luzerne Co. Budget
Despite objections earlier this week... Luzerne County residents will be paying more property taxes... thanks to a newly revised budget. During Tuesday night's County Council meeting... commissioners voting six to five to approve the revised $122 – million spending plan. That means property owners will see a 2 % increase in their taxes. In addition... up to fifty current Luzerne County employees could be losing their jobs.
Machete Attack Folo
We're learning more about that machete attack near Wilkes – Barre's GAR High School last week... which severed the hand of a 15 - year old boy. Police say they found the weapon hidden in the bushes in the 2-hundred block of Lehigh Street... near Grant on Tuesday, but don't know if it was involved in the attack. Investigators plan to send it off to a lab to check for fingerprints or other incriminating evidence.
Manager to Arrive Late
The man hired to become Luzerne County's first manager under home rule will start a week later than expected. Robert Lawton was to start his new job on the 21st of the month. But, that's been pushed back to the 29th. The reason... relocating from California to Luzerne County is going to take some extra time.
One northeastern Pennsylvania State Representative has authored legislation... to improve the process of doing business in the state. The bill by Representative Mike Peifer and approved recently by the house would create an on-line portal that would offer a one-stop-shop for companies seeking to obtain permits, applications and information on setting up a business.
It doesn't appear that former Penn State assistant football coach will be seeing three of his grandkids soon. A judge ruling he can have supervised visits with his 11 of his grandchildren at his home until his sex abuse trial begins in May. However... his former daughter-in-law Jill Thomas said she doesn't plan to take the kids to Sandusky's home. Right now... 29 – year old Thomas is involved in a custody dispute with her former husband... Sandusky's son... Matt.
A Williamsport man is in jail... charged with a late – Monday night homicide in Lycoming County. Police say 32 – year old William Kemp... allegedly shot and killed 42 – year old Thomas Schmidt from Allentown during a fight. The incident happening in the 1,000 block of Franklin Street. Police say they found a handgun believed to be used in the shooting. They also say alcohol may be a factor in the shooting death.

Girls HS BB
In girls high school basketball last night.. Shamokin just got by Danville 41 to 40 giving the Indians the Heartland Conference Division One Championship. South Williamsport defeated Central Columbia 55 to 44. The loss means the Blue Jays do not qualify for the district playoffs. In other games Montgomery downed Millville 36 to 14... Muncy defeated Benton 38 to 33..
Boys HS BB
In boys basketball Wednesday night, Bloomsburg can clinch the Heartland Conference Division 3 championship with a win at Sullivan County. If the Panthers lose, they will have to share the title with Sullivan County and possibly South Williamsport as well. Meantime... The Southern Columbia boys can clinch at least a share of the Heartland Conference Division 2 title with a win Wednesday night against Montoursville. The Central Columbia boys play at Mount Carmel needing a win to qualify for the District playoffs which begin next week.
Bloomsburg University Basketball
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams are still in first place in the PSAC East following their games at Mansfield Wednesday night. The Women won their game 62-59.
