An $829,000 contract has been awarded by the State Department of Environmental Protection to clean up parts of Fishing Creek. State Representative David Millard tells us the first portion of the project is in West Bloomsburg and calls for the removal of a concrete overflow dam near the former Magee Museum. The second project is in Mt. Pleasant Township where 540 feet of bank protection along Fishing Creek near the location of a previous dam and railroad bridge... as well as bank protection near the Back Branch Road Bridge over Fishing Creek. Millard said the project is being undertaken by an Elysburg – based contractor... who is expected to have it finished by November.
Skate Ramp / Knorr
The Bloomsburg Town Council... and the police department have thrown down the gauntlet.... no one is allowed to use the Skateboard area of Town Park. The town has been trying to keep skate boarders off the wooden ramps... ever since the flooding of Lee took it's toll. Bloomsburg Mayor Knorr says barricades have been put in place... and some skate boarders have already been cited by police for trespassing on the property.
Bloom Residents Unhappy
Residents who live along West Third Street between Market and Railroad Streets in Bloomsburg are not a bit happy about construction in front of their homes... and they made sure Town Council knew that Monday night. The issue came up when an ordinance surfaced calling for new curbs and sidewalks on West Third. However, the small, but vocal group complained about the poor work preformed by a sub – contractor hired by United Water. It deals with the quality of their construction... and the alleged severing of severed natural gas lines. That issue wasn't resolved... but a representative from United Water will be called on the carpet in an effort to determine why a particular company was hired and who's going to pay for the damage crews caused.
The investigation continues into a fatal, one – car accident which happened early last month in the 500 block of Millville Road. Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says investigators are looking for information... or better yet... witnesses who may have seen the crash. Colton Eyer died when he lost control of his Honda Civic as it crested a hill near Kressler's Garage... and slammed into a parked car. His compact car coming to rest on it's roof in the middle of Millville Road. If you have information about the crash... call Sgt. Leonard Rogutski at the Bloomsburg Police Department.
Barn Fire Folo
A state police fire marshal has ruled that a Sunday night blaze in Liberty Township... west of Danville... is arson. The fire broke out early Sunday evening at the Neil Jenkins farm... and destroyed hay and some equipment inside a barn, but animals were led to safety. Authorities say the building was torched... but are holding off on saying if there is a serial arsonist on the loose.
Luzerne County Budget
The Luzerne County Commission is expected to approve a revised $122.6 - million dollar budget when they meet Tuesday night in Wilkes – Barre. During a public hearing on Monday... residents indicated they didn't like the plan... since the revised budget contains a 2% tax hike... and the reducing of Luzerne County's workforce by 50 – positions. Taxpayers say they aren't happy about the salaries of some county employees... union contracts and health care benefits for part – time lawyers.
Sentencing in federal court has been postponed for a father and son from McAdoo. Craig and Shawn Christy pleaded guilty of using the phone to harass Sarah Palins attorney's. Palin is a former Alaska Governor... and a one – time Republican vice presidential candidate. The sentencing put on hold until the Christy's can undergo a mental health evaluation.

Girls High School Basketball
In girls' high school basketball last night.... Berwick was at home against Coughlin. At the final buzzer Berwick dominated Coughlin 45 to 19.
Tuesday night is a big big night for the Danville and Central Columbia girls basketball teams. Danville plays at Shamokin needing a win to share the Heartland Conference Division One championship with Shamokin. Central Columbia is at home against South Williamsport needing a win to qualify for the District playoffs.
Bloomsburg University Women's Basketball
Bloomsburg University junior Dana Weiller is the PSAC Eastern Division athlete of the week. Weiller had a career high 32 points in Saturday's win over West Chester.
