Ice Scraper Action

What a way to start the day.... using an ice scrapper getting snow and ice off the windshield. Although our latest round of winter began with flurries at midday... all the snow... and freezing rain turned to ice during the early evening hours. That made roads slick and intersections treacherous. But the snow and freezing rain led to a series of accidents in which drivers lost control of their cars... ending up in ditches. Road crews were out overnight salting the highways... making sure the drive to work this morning went smoothly.

 

Gov. Corbett Visits Milton

Governor Corbett was in the Susquehanna Valley pushing his $27.1 dollar budget presented to the House and Senate earlier this week. Using Minuteman Environmental Services in Milton as a backdrop... Mr. Corbett says he'll sit down with lawmakers in order to iron out a budget by the June 30th deadline. Mr. Corbett also hammered home that his budget plan focuses on job creation and economic opportunity... such as in the Marcellus Shale fields which Minuteman Environmental has cultivated the past few years.

 

Berwick Fire

Cooking oil left on the stove is the apparent cause of a fire which gutted a two story home in the 200 block of West 9th Street in Berwick Wednesday night. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... 37 – year old Shawn Docherty was making some french fries... when he went to a nearby store. But the oil apparently caught fire... temporarily trapping his wife... and a relative on the second floor. Both escaped with what they had. One fire fighter suffered a rib injury... and was taken to the Berwick Hospital for treatment

 

Northumberland County Residents Dead

Four people from Northumberland County are dead following a two – car crash in Florida... near Naples. The Florida Highway Patrol identified the dead as 66 - year old James Rosini ... 68 – year old William Rosini... 65 – year old Patricia Rosini all of Coal Township... as well as 59 – year old Deborah Korbich of Elysburg. The FHP said James Rosini blew a stop sign... and his Ford was struck by a van driven by 63 – year old David Dahl of South Williamsport. Rosini was a former judge in Northumberland County... and was serving as the County's assistant solicitor. Patricia Rosini was the director of Northumberland County's Agency on Aging.

 

Bank Construction

For the most part... you can't beat our winter weather. It's allowed contractors to do what they do best.... build. Workers were busy Wednesday on the new First Columbia Bank branch at the Market Street Plaza in Bloomsburg. Before the first flurries flew... crews were using hand held saws to cut wood.... then hammering them in place. The original building at that location was a causality of the floods of September. The new branch should be up and running by spring or early summer.

 

Fire Chief

A Wilkes – Barre Township fire chief... in Luzerne County... has pleaded guilty on an assault charge. We've been following the legal saga of John Yuknavich. He pleaded guilty Wednesday on charges to being drunk when he stole his ex – girlfriend's cellphone... assaulted her friend and threatened to shoot both of them. Meantime, he faces theft charges after state police say he allegedly made off with more than $10,000 dollars from the W-B Township Fire Department.

 

Lou Barletta

US Representative Lou Barletta of Hazleton has joined with Catholic leaders in speaking out against the Obama administration's plan to force religious employers to provide heath care coverage... which includes contraception. Speaking on the house floor on Wednesday... congressman Barletta said the Obama plan violates their most basic principals. He also also accused the administration of overreaching federal authority.

BU Basketball

There was a doubleheader of college basketball action last night at Bloomsburg University's Nelson Field House. In games you heard on the WHLM Stations... the Huskies taking on the Shippensburg Raiders. At the final buzzer.. the women's team defeated the Lady Raiders 72 to 63... while the men's team rolled over Shippensburg 75 to 54. The Huskies will be back in action Saturday afternoon taking on West Chester at the Nelson Field House starting with the women's game at 1 o'clock.

 

Boys High School Basketball

There was plenty of boys high school basketball action Wednesday night... Bloomsburg defeated Muncy 56 to 44... Benton downed Millville 57 to 40... Central Columbia just getting by Lewisburg 45 to 43... Danville rolled over Mifflinburg 55 to 40... and Southern Columbia got by Mount Carmel 52 to 34...

 

High School Wrestling

In high school wrestling Thursday afternoon... Central Columbia faces Mount Union in the PIAA team duals in Hershey. That match starts at 2 o'clock.
