Pennsylvania's Proposed Budget
We should know by midday... what sort of budget plan for the coming fiscal year Governor Corbett will unveil. No one really knows... but State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township hopes a balanced budget doesn't come at the expense of education which was hammered a year ago. Meantime... Central Columbia School District Superintendent Harry Mathias is also waiting to see what Mr. Corbett has to say. Superintendent Mathias says he expects the governor to announce flat funding for schools... no increase in money, but no decrease. Hearings on the proposed 2012 – 2013 budget begin in two weeks in Harrisburg.
It's an issue that doesn't come up that much among friends... hospice care at the end of life. That's the topic of an informational event tomorrow night at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Volunteer coordinator Jane Brockman says there are many misconceptions... but there is just one conclusion. Wednesday night's talk about hospice care begins at 6 O'clock at the Henry Hood Center on the Geisinger campus in Danville.
There was a lot of activity around a Briar Creek Township hotel room on Monday. That's when police... using a search warrant... raided a room at the Red Maple Inn that doubled as a suspected meth lab. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition that no one was inside the room... and no arrests were made.
Eight people were arrested over the weekend by police in the Berwick area on various drug charges. A big break came when 45 – year old Brian Boom and 44 – year old Melissa Dodge were busted an an apartment in the 300 block of North Vine Street. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... that police say the pair manufactured meth... and allegedly sold it to an informant on at least three occasions.
Hazle Twp Fire
An elderly couple were rescued from their burning home on Winters Avenue Monday night in the Greenridge section of Hazle Township. Published reports say neighbors helped get an elderly woman... and her wheelchair – bound husband out of the home in the 600 block of Winters Avenue. The woman was not hurt, but her husband was airlifted to an Allentown hospital for treatment.
Propane Truck Crash
Route 93... from Main Street to Country lane near Sugarloaf... is open Tuesday morning.... after the two lane road was closed for hours on Monday. It followed the crash of a propane tank truck with an estimated 2,400 gallons of the product on – board. The driver of the truck telling investigators he dropped a bottle on the floor... when he tried to retrieve it... he crashed into a wooded area. The driver.. who was not identified... was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville for treatment of injuries.
Barletta / Trucks
Heavier trucks on the highways... including Interstate 80 was expected to be the norm rather than the exception in a proposal being considered by congress. But that won't happen overnight. Congressman Lou Barletta... who represents Columbia County.. offered an amendment along with Congressman Jerry Costello... a Democrat from Illinois. Mr. Barletta says a three year study could prove to be important before heavier truck weights could be approved thanks to an e-mail from PennDOT. The Barletta / Costello amendment was adopted 33 to 22.
Sugarloaf Robbery Folo
Police say it was a woman who robbed a Convenience store Sunday afternoon near Sugarloaf... in Luzerne County. Now... 27 – year old Valeria Weston of McAdoo is charged with robbing Joe's Choice Convenient Mart along Route 93. Weston telling investigators blamed the robbery of the store on her drug habit.
The price of a gallon of gas across northeastern Pennsylvania is holding steady at $3.56 a gallon for self – serve unleaded regular. That's what it's been the past couple of days. The Triple – A fuel gauge report shows that a week ago we were paying an average of $3.54 a gallon. A month ago... the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.49.
A final framework is at hand on sweeping legislation to impose an impact fee and update safety regulations on Pennsylvania’s booming natural gas industry, top Republican state lawmakers say. Republicans notified rank-and-file lawmakers over the weekend that they hope to hold votes this week on a framework reached by negotiators from the House, Senate and Gov. In a game heard on the WHLM Stations, the Danville boys' basketball team extended their winning streak to 17 games after their 68 - 32 victory over Central Columbia Monday night. Danville is now 17 and 2 on the season. Central Columbia must win 2 of their remaining 3 games to qualify for the district playoffs. In other boys basketball action last night.... Selinsgrove just got by Southern Columbia 54 to 53... Saint John Neuman downed Columbia Montour Vo Tech 82 to 47... and Nanticoke defeated Benton 52 to 48...
