The auditorium of the Berwick High School was nearly filled to capacity last night.... and more than the 100 – plus voices of the Berwick Community Choir took the stage. The event... the taping of a pilot TV show... called “The Choir...” for the USA Network. A British version of the show has been aired on the BBC for the past four years. From this point on... the producers will edit the final version and present it to network brass. If they like what they see... they're expected to order an additional 12 shows to make up a basic 13 week run.
Kiddie Porn Alleged
A 19 – year old Bloomsburg University student has been released on $10,000 bail after he was arrested and charged with having kiddie porn on a laptop and thumb drive. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition Alexander LaRosa of Hatboro... was busted on a long list of charges after someone found his thumb drive on the floor of an on – campus restaurant. The drive allegedly containing video and images of children preforming sex acts. Similar content was allegedly found on his lap top. LaRosa will have a hearing on the charges next week.
A Danville – area Boy Scout leader was arraigned Wednesday... after she was accused of theft from a scout troop's treasury. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in today's edition... 44 – year old Tracey Myers of Danville was arrested and charged with theft and receiving stolen property. Authorities say an estimated $4,000 was missing from the bank account of Boy Scout troop 37 when the discovery was made by another troop member in a leadership position. Myers allegedly used the money to cover her bills. A preliminary hearing is set for later this month.
Election offices in Columbia and Montour Counties... as well as across the state are in limbo when it comes to State House and Senate districts. The PA supreme court striking down districts based on the 2010 census. But, Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says the indecision of the courts is making things tough in his office. No timetable for redistricting has been set by the state's highest court.... and until there is... local election offices will be forced to use district maps based on the 2001 census.
The borough of Berwick continues it's search for a new manager. Shane Pepe who held the position the past few years moved on to become manager in Emmaus last month. Assistant Borough manager Lauren Martz now filling in on a interim basis. Mayor Jim Timbrell said 20 people have applied for the job. No time table has been set as to select a new Berwick Borough Manager.
The Hazleton Area School District locked down the systems 9th grade center on Wednesday... after one student was injured in a fight. Authorities say two 14 – year old boys got into a scuffle for some unknown reason... with one of the teens cut on the face. The complex which includes the high school and career center were locked down for about an hour. The injured teen was treated at Hazleton General Hospital.
Hazleton police have charged a Berwick man with stealing copper while he was working for a contractor. 36 – year old Quinn Keck is accused of allegedly making off with an estimated $4,000 of copper pipes for a heating systems... as well as rolled copper from an antique sign last September from Hayden Tower on West Broad Street. Keck is in the Luzerne County Prison awaiting arraignment in April.
There won't be any union strife the next five years at the Cargill Meat Solutions plant in the Humboldt Industrial Park... south of Hazleton. 97% of the unionized workers voted for a new, five year contract. That pact calls for wage increases and the continuation of health care benefits.
Bloomsburg Universal Basketball
The Bloomsburg University men's and women's basketball teams were on the road Wednesday night... playing at Millersville. In games you heard on the WHLM Stations... the Millersville men defeated Bloomsburg University 75 to 68.... while in the women's game... BU just got by Millersville 77 to 73. The next game for the Huskies will be Saturday afternoon at Cheyney.

Loyalsock defeated Southern Columbia 52 to 48... Bloomsburg down Montgomery 72 to 18... It was Central Columbia over Hughesville 49 to 26... Danville defeated Milton 74 to 35... and Saint John Neuman getting by Millville 57 to 38.
