Slick roads near Millville Tuesday are being blamed as a contributing factor in the traffic death of a Huntington County man. State Police at Bloomsburg tell us 30 – year old Theodore Cromwell of Mt. Union died behind the wheel of his Mazda when he lost control... and slammed head on into a pick-up truck on slush – covered Route 642 near Millville. Cromwell was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick – up.. 51 – year old Gale Stackhouse of Unityville was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.
It's been a mild winter for us here thus far in Columbia and Montour Counties.... and that keeps the folks at PennDOT happy. That translates into less spending for snow removal... but it also means crews are more pro – active than in the past tracking approaching storms... so says the agency's Rick Mason. For example... prior to the overnight storm of this week... crews were out early spreading anti – skid material and salt prior to the arrival of freezing rain.
Trash to Treasure
Bloomsburg University will host it's annual Trash to Treasure fund raising event this Saturday... starting at 9 AM... at the Multicultural Center of Kher Union Building. The proceeds go to the Columbia County United Way... and the organization's John Thomas said the hot items this year will be computer equipment. Thomas says tickets to the early bird sale are available at the United Way Office on Penn Street... near the Bloomsburg Hospital.
Five people... three from our area... and two from New Jersey... are in jail after they allegedly burglarized a Mahoning Township home last week.. making off with $12,000 in stolen goods. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition.. 23 – year old Brian Mellor of Shickshinny... as well as 20 – year old Nicholas Harker.. and 23 – year old Charity Cooper of Almedia were arrested along with two New Jersey men. All are accused of burglarizing the Myers Road home of Cindy and Robert Munsch while they were out.
A new study ranks Geisinger Health System as one of the top 15 health systems in the United States. The fourth annual Thomson Reuters 15 Top Health Systems study is reporting that Danville – based Geisinger was among the 15 hospital systems singled out for achievement in clinical outcomes based on balanced system-wide clinical performance according to data collected from more than 300 organizations. That performance measures included care quality, patient perception of care and efficiency.
Delaware Water Gap
Congressman Lou Barletta is delivering. The Hazleton Republican announcing that the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area will receive $530,000 from the Federal Transit Administration for a program to reduce traffic congestion in the park. The grant will be used to study and implement a regional alternative transportation system in the Recreation Area.... in order to coordinate and connect existing and new systems to best serve visitors.
Hazleton police still trying to find two men who allegedly attempted to pull a 21 – year old woman from her car earlier this month. The incident taking place at a shopping center on West Broad Street last Thursday. Police say they're looking for two heavy – set Hispanic men in their 20's who drove a white mini – van. If you have information about the case... call Hazleton Police.
Two juveniles are in jail after being arrested on a long list of charges stemming from a fight involving four people in Banks Township... in Carbon County... south of Hazleton. The names of the 16 and 17 year old teens have not been released... but they're accused of fighting with three men... and in the process displaying a handgun. The two teens were jailed when they couldn't come up with 100 – thousand dollars bail.
Northfield, Illinois – based Kraft Foods says it will eliminate 60 jobs at its financial services unit in Hanover Township... near Sugar Notch in Luzerne County. An estimated 730 people work at the location. The cuts are part of a plan to eliminate 1,600 jobs across North America... as well as streamlining Kraft's business units.

On Tuesday night... Central Columbia was at Southern Columbia. At the final buzzer... Southern getting by Central 37 to 35. In other boys' games last night... Dallas defeated Berwick 64 to 42... Bloomsburg got by Saint John Neuman 65 to 51... Danville over Jersey Shore 77 to 54... South Williamsport got by Millville 66 to 38... and Muncy defeated Benton 76 to 40..
In Huskies College Basketball Wednesday the Men's & Women's teams were at home to host Mansfield. The Women won their game 84-75.
