It's not as bad as weather forecasters had predicted. We got snow, freezing rain and sleet overnight... which turned to rain early Tuesday morning. PennDOT crews pre – treated the highways with anti – skid material and salt... so for the most part roads are generally wet. But in the higher elevations... there are some slippery spots. That has forced the Sullivan County School District to delay classes by two hours Tuesday morning. District officials telling us that there are some icy patches around... and since the majority of students use busing... they don't want to take any chances... so that's why Tuesday's classes in Sullivan County will be delayed two hours.
It appears Bloomsburg Mayor Dan Knorr is seeking a new political office. According to a news release... Mayor Knorr is expected to announce that he's seeking the state house seat in the 109th district... the one currently held by state representative David Millard. The announcement is set for Wednesday night. Meantime... James Geffken of Sugarloaf Township is also expected to enter the race... and would face Knorr in the April democratic primary election. Millard has held the seat since 2004... and has successfully defeated challengers in the past... the last time in 2010 when two candidates sought the seat.
A week from today is the first day for candidates seeking elective office in the 2012 election cycle to circulate nominating petitions. That's the first step in getting on the April primary election ballot. But, for the most part this year's elections deal with state and federal offices. And with a presidential election this year... Columbia County Chief Registrar Matt Rapasky says his office will see a lot of activity.
As Shickshinny... in neighboring Luzerne County... recovers from September Flooding... officials there are turning to the Susquehanna River to revitalize it's economy. In essence... it appears borough officials want to make the waterway a destination spot... so says Mayor Beverly Moore. During a recent interview with WHLM Radio News... Mayor Moore talked about boating and kayaking on the Susquehanna as well as using the Warrior Trail next to the waterway.
Turkey Hill Store
For the third time in as many weeks... the Turkey Hill store on Alter Street in Hazleton has been the target of robbers. Police say this time three men strolled into the store at the corner of 15th Street early Monday morning. The bandits taking cash and cigarettes. The clerk was not hurt in the stick up.
It appears gasoline prices of self serve, unleaded regular have stabilized somewhat in northeastern Pennsylvania. The latest survey by the Triple - A shows prices averaging $3.46 a gallon... the same as it was all weekend... and as far back as a week ago. A month ago we were paying $3.31 a gallon.... and in January of 2011... the price of a gallon of gas was $3.16.
State Police are investigating a one vehicle accident which happened last night on Route 901 between Excelsior and Ranshaw... in Coal Township... in Northumberland County. One person was killed... a second was injured. Witnesses telling authorities the driver of a pick up truck lost control on an icy bridge and it flipped over several times before plunging down an embankment. The dead person is described as a woman... the injured a man. No names have been released. The man taken to a near – by hospital for treatment.
Wood - Mode Cabinets
The manufacturer of kitchen cabinets in Snyder County is being hit... once again... by the nation's economic downturn. A spokesman for Wood – Mode in Kremer says 90 people of it's 1,100 person workforce will be let go through mid – February. The big reason is the recession and the fact contractors aren't building new homes. Wood – Mode is the largest employer in Snyder County.
The Southern Columbia boys' basketball team is unbeaten in the Heartland Conference Division 2. Tuesday night the Tigers are at home against long time rival Central Columbia. In boys basketball Monday night... Columbia Montour Vo Tech defeated Bloomsburg Christian 61 to 51.
In girls basketball from Monday night... Dallas downed Berwick in overtime 41 to 21... Danville got by Southern Columbia 42 to 31... and Saint John Neuman defeated Columbia Montour Vo – Tech 42 to 23.
