Winter Weather Advisory

Our weather is going to be changing during the next 24 hours or so. The National Weather Service in State College has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area... including Columbia and Montour County beginning at 9 O'clock Monday night. Meteorologists are forecasting snow... freezing rain and sleet overnight... with the mixture changing to rain after 4 Tuesday morning. That could make driving overnight a bit treacherous. Road crews throughout the area will spend the day preparing for the weather coming their way.

 

Burn Victim Dies

A 27 – year old Montour Township woman... burned over 90% of her body.. died over the weekend at the Lehigh Valley Hospital's Burn Center. If you recall... 27 – year old Elizabeth Kopitsky was severely burned last month when her nylon clothing caught fire after she handled gasoline at the family home on Grovania Drive. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Monday's edition that Ms. Kopitsky died early Sunday morning. Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week.

 

Tourism

Is the tourism industry in Pennsylvania fractured ??? The executive director of the Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau believes it is. Otto Kurecian says the tourism industry in the state does not speak with a single voice. Kurecian says the problem could be solved by taking tourism out of the Community and Economic Development Department... and allowing the tourism to become a commission.

 

David Millard / Marcellus

Governor Corbett and his advisers are trying to come up with a proposed budget for the state's fiscal year which begins July 1st. That may be six months away, but already the state treasury is facing a half – billion dollar shortfall this year alone. State Representative David Millard of Mt. Pleasant Township says getting dollars from the Marcellus Shale industry will play an important role in the 2012 – 2013 budget.

 

Hazle Twp Fire

A fire at a plant in the Valmont Industrial Park near Hazleton was knocked down quickly by Hazle Township firemen. They were called out to Fabri – Kal on Lyons drive at midday Sunday. The company makes plastic cups. Authorities say plastic on one line caught fire... and spread to a second line when employees tried to extinguish it. No injuries were reported.

 

Hunlock Creek Fire

A Hunlock Creek home... in Luzerne County... was extensively damaged by fire midday Sunday. Firemen were called to Remond Road when the owner of the home spotted a fire around his chimney when trying to retrieve some firewood. The two story home was effected by smoke and water damage.  The family who lived there is being helped by the American Red Cross.

 

Post Office/Shickshinny

Congressman Lou Barletta has fired off a letter to two high – ranking postal officials urging them to re-open the Shickshinny Post Office as soon as possible. The Post Office sustained substantial damage during the flooding produced by tropical storm Lee back in September. Barletta says the post office is often the focal point of small communities... such as Shickshinny. No response yet from postal officials.

 

Danville Evaluations

By this time next year... all Danville Borough employee will be graded under an evaluation system. That word coming out of a recent council meeting. Under the proposal... 32 employes will be evaluated for job performance. It's all designed to make workers more efficient so they can do a better job for the borough.

 

Powerball

If you play the multi-state Powerball game Wednesday... it's going to cost you more, but the basic jackpot will be bigger. Following this past weekend's drawing... it will cost you two dollars per ticket... an increase of a buck over last week. But instead of the basic $20 – million jackpot... the initial payout will now be $40 – million. The PA Lottery Commission say players have a one - in - 35 chance of winning a prize.

BU Wrestling

College wrestling Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field House, Bloomsburg University saw its 10 match winning streak come to an end in a 30 to 3 loss to Pitt. The Huskies only win came at 285 pounds where Zach Walsh won a decision. With the win, Pitt improved their record to 10 and one. Bloomsburg is now 12 and four. The Huskies next match is Saturday night at West Virginia.

 

NFL NFC Playoff Game

In his first season in the NFL, Southern Columbia product Henry Hynoski will be playing in an NFC Championship game. On Sunday... Hynoski and his New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 37-20. Next Sunday they will play the 49ers in San Francisco.

 

NFL AFC Playoff Game

In Sunday's other playoff game, Baltimore over Houston 20-13. The Ravens will play the New England Patriots next Sunday in the AFC final.
