Held for Trial

An athletic trainer at Warrior Run High School in Turbotville has been ordered to stand trial for alleged in appropriate contact with two teenage girls.... who were his students. No trial date has been set for 27 – year old Matthew Godfrey. He was bound over for trial during a preliminary hearing on Wednesday in Milton. Godfrey is accused of touching one of the girls.... and having sex with the second.

 

Salem Twp. Crash

A Salem Township woman remains at the Geisinger Medical Center after her car was rammed by a pick up truck Wednesday afternoon on Route 11... near Bell Bend Road. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition 50 – year old Teddy Luciw of Salem Township was southbound... and allegedly passed a car illegally. That's when his pick up collided head – on into a Buick driven by 84 – year old Rachel Wolfe... who was trying to make a turn from the center lane. Luciw was taken to the Berwick Hospital for treatment... while Wolfe was life-flighted to Geisinger.

 

Trailer Fire

Four people are homeless after a fire destroyed their mobile home Wednesday afternoon in Briar Creek Township... near Berwick. When firemen got to Heller's Mobile Home Park... there was little they could do. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Thursday's edition... Danny Lemon and Kristina Hagan... and their two teenaged children lost everything to the flames. The origin of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

 

PA Farm Show

The 96th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show opens its doors to the public Saturday morning in Harrisburg. The week long exposition will have an estimated 400,000 people come through the turnstiles of the Farm Show Complex... to view 6,000 animals... 10,000 competitive exhibits and nearly 300 commercial displays. Nicole Bucher of the State Agriculture Department says Columbia and Montour County's plays an important role in the Farm Show. The Pennsylvania Farm Show runs through January 14th.

 

Tourism Money

A half – dozen tourist related organizations will split $50,000 in grant money handed out this week by the Montour County Commissioners in Danville. The grants are earmarked for the Iron Heritage Festival... to the Montour – DeLong Fair and the Danville Business Alliance. Otto Kurecian of the Columbia – Montour Visitors Bureau says the grant money means a lot to the non – profit groups. The grants from Commissioners comes from a 3% bed tax... tacked onto motel and hotel rooms in Montour County.

 

Drug Arrest

Three people were arrested in two drug stings earlier this week at a Sheetz convenience store on Montour Boulevard near Danville. Police say the busts involved heroin and prescription painkillers. They allege 32-year-old Wayne Sult of Millville... as well as 28-year-old Heather Gordner of Danville, sold four packets of heroin to a confidential informant. Also 27-year-old Charles Coleman Jr. of Danville, allegedly sold an informant three OxyContin tablets. Coleman and Sult were jailed in the Montour County Prison while Gordner remains free on bail.

 

House Condemned

City of Hazleton code enforcement condemning an apartment in the 500 block of West 7th Street. Inspectors taking the action Wednesday when they found two people living there... without electricity and heat... with burst water pipes. The two people found inside were told to leave... but at the same time enforcement officials were attempting to find temporary housing for the pair and their animals.

 

State Revenue

The latest revenue report shows more of the same for state government. Holiday shoppers couldn't stop the state revenue free fall. General Fund collections were $141-million, or nearly 6%, below expectation in December. That means -- year-to-date -- Pennsylvania is $486-million dollars off the mark, and we're only six months into the fiscal year. Even sales tax receipts weren't up to expectation, in a month largely consumed by seasonal shoppers.

 

Pay Freeze

There is a published report that Governor Tom Corbett is ordering a pay freeze for top state employees, including himself. Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley the freeze applies to members of the governor's Cabinet and management employees in state government. Corbett's order blocked three-percent annual cost-of-living increases that were scheduled to take effect Sunday for executive branch employees.

Giants Preview

Former Southern Columbia football star Henry Hynoski helped the New York Giants into the NFL post season... and this Sunday he'll try and help them advance in those playoffs. Hynoski caught four passes and did his usual great job of blocking in last Sunday night's win over the Dallas Cowboys that gave the Giants the NFC East Title. On Sunday afternoon, Hynoski and the Giants will play the Atlanta Falcons in New York.

 

Orange Bowl

In college football last night, in the Orange Bowl in Miami...a high scoring game... as No. 22 West Virginia routed 14th – ranked Clemson 70 to 33.

 

Boys Basketball

In boys' high school basketball Wednesday night... Bucktail Area defeated Benton 67 to 38.

 

Girls Basketball

In girls high school basketball... St. John Neuman getting by Benton 46 to 40... Mt. Carmel defeated Central Columbia 62 to 48... In an overtime game... Montoursville got the best of Danville 40 to 32...and it was Southern Columbia over Sullivan County 43 to 24.
