Burglaries

With the holiday season fast approaching... now is the time to have a lot of situational awareness... in essence where are your valuables are. Bloomsburg Police Officer Ken Auchter says between December 3rd and the 5th... officer investigated ten separate complaints of criminal mischief... and theft from vehicles along East 3rd and 4th Street... as well as along Lightstreet Road.

 

Sandusky

Former Penn State Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky is free on bail Friday morning after spending one night in the Centre County Jail. Sandusky posted a $250,000 bond after he was arrested earlier this week on a dozen new sex abuse counts. On – line court records show that Sandusky secured his release using $200,000 in real estate holdings... and a $50,000 certified check provided by his wife.

 

Traffic Victim Identified

A 2011 graduate of Southern Columbia High School has been identified as the person killed in a collision between her car and a PennDOT snow plow on Route 487 earlier this week. 18 – year old Eleni Bennett of Mountain Road in Ralpho Township was pronounced dead at the scene. Locust Township police chief Allen Breach said Ms. Bennett died of blunt force trauma when the driver's side of her Kia collided with the big yellow snow plow. Investigators are still probing the crash, but it's believe slippery roads may have been a contributing factor.

 

AGAPE / Toys

Faith – based AGAPE is making sure the kids affected by the floods of September have a Merry Christmas. They're accepting donations of new toys through the close of business Saturday... which will be distributed next week. AGAPE's Kathy Lowe says the toy giveaway on the 17th takes place at the former Bloomsburg Mills warehouse on 6th Street.

 

Bath Salt Ban

Congressman Lou Barletta... who represents Columbia County... was in the majority when he voted for the passage of a bill dealing with the ban of so – called bath salts... and other synthetic drug substitutes.

The passage of the measure now recognizes the products as a schedule one drug of the controlled substances act. Passage of the measure in Washington comes months after Columbia County officials took action on their own to ban the sale of Bath Salts.

 

GMC / Flu

The Department of Health was at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville Thursday... where they presented an award for increasing influenza vaccination rates among its staff. Dr. Stephen Ostroff, the state’s Acting Physician General... presented the award and recognize all of the participants of the “Earn Your Stripes” campaign. The campaign designed to encourage hospitals in the commonwealth to increase influenza vaccination rates among health care workers. The event is part of National Influenza Vaccination Week, which runs through Saturday.

 

Trinity House

A ceremonial groundbreaking and ribbon cutting will be held this afternoon to mark the beginning of Trinity House at the corner of Third and Iron Streets. The project is a collaboration between the community and Bloomsburg University. The converted church provides housing to 19 adult tenants with disabilities. A university spokesperson says neighbors on either side are BU students who are gaining a real life experience. The event begins at 1 O'clock at the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ at 230 E. 7th Street in Bloomsburg.

 

Boil Water

A boil water advisory has been issued for the Beech Mountain Lakes development in Butler Township near Hazleton. The company which runs the water system said a water main break is the reason for the advisory. A boil water advisory is usually in effect for an estimated 48 hours.

 

Surveillance Video

State Police are still searching for two men wanted in connection with the robbery of a Turkey Hill convenience store manager as she tried to put a deposit in a bank near Hazleton. State Police say the pair set up barrels and cones outside a branch of the PNC Bank... forcing customers to get out of their cars... making them a prime target for an attack. Video surveillance show the suspect approaching the woman... using a pellet gun to shoot her... then taking the money bag. High School Football

In State Playoff Semifinals Friday night, Southern Columbia rolled over Penn's Manor 37-6. Southern goes on to face Clariton next Friday in the State Final. You can catch that game on the WHLM stations and here on WHLM.com.

 

Bloomsburg University

It's a busy weekend of college basketball at the Nelson Field House. Friday night the Huskies faced Slippery Rock. The Women's team won their game 86-67. The Men won their match as well 62-58. The Huskies face Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon.
