Bloomsburg Town Council members are pretty much in agreement on a proposed $4.3 – million budget for the 2012 fiscal year. Following a budget work session at Town Hall last night... Mayor Dan Knorr says he's happy with the proposal. The proposal calls for the addition of a police and code enforcement officer... without a property tax increase. Council votes on the proposal December 21st.
A Bloomsburg man is recovering from injuries received late Monday afternoon when his motorcycle was struck by a car on Route 11 in Montour Township. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Tuesday's edition... 48 – year old Kenneth Green had an apparent malfunctioning electrical system on his bike. He drifted into the center lane... apparently to turn left into a parking lot.... when his motorcycle was hit by a car driven by a Middleburg man. Green sustained a broken leg in the accident.
A compromise may be in the works in Harrisburg dealing with a proposal to allow Sunday hunting across the state... as well as in Columbia and Montour Counties. State Representative Garth Everett of neighboring Lycoming County says the compromise would allow private landowners to opt – into Sunday hunting… and allow the DNR to take state lands out of the hunting equation.
He'll probably be going away for a long time. Tyrek Smith... arrested in the shooting death of Abdul Shabazz at a West Hazleton home earlier this year... has pleaded guilty to robbery. He remains on trial at the Luzerne County Courthouse... along with his two cousins... in the murder of Shabazz who allegedly was delivering a package of marijuana at the time of his death.
Those subpoenaed documents dealing with the proposed re-development of the Sterling Hotel in Wilkes – Barre.... are now in the hands of a grand jury. Late last week... the grand jury asked for the documents... but they didn't say why they wanted them. Now it's believed the hotel's owner... CityVest... is being investigated as to how it spent $6 million dollars given to it by Luzerne County.
Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke want to higher three new deans. That... after the Middle States Commission on Higher Education said they want to be sure the school is meeting commission standards. College President Thomas Leary says he and several others serve dual roles. However, that isn't sitting well with the commission... so the school has launched a national search for the deans.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has unveiled a new security hologram that makes it easier to spot fake drivers' licenses and identification cards. The new hologram suppresses the "rainbow" colors normally associated with holographic images. The result is a hologram that appears to switch between white and black as the image is moved. Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to use this enhanced security feature.
The Southern Columbia football team will be making the school's 14th appearance in the Class A state semifinals when the Tigers play Penns Manor Friday night at Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall. Friday's game kicks off at 7 O'clock. You can hear it on Class Rock 103.5 starting with the pregame show at 6:30.
Bloomsburg University's senior point guard Trevon Johnson is the PSAC Eastern Division athlete of the week. Johnson averaged over 11 points and 7 assists in three Husky wins. Bloomsburg will take a 7 and one record into two weekend home games-Friday night against Slippery Rock and Saturday afternoon against Mercyhurst.
