New Charges

That Penn State sex abuse scandal involving former coach Jerry Sandusky is exploding. The Harrisburg Patriot News... and CNN is reporting two new investigations have been opened by the department of Children and Youth Services. Sandusky was arrested earlier this month following the release of a grand jury report detailing crimes that he is accused of committing between 1994 and 2009. He has denied the allegations and is free on $100,000 bail.

 

Wise Pleads

A Montour County man has pleaded guilty to the stabbing death of his gal – pal earlier this year in Danville. 33 – year old Westley Wise was accused of stabbing 26 – year old Jessica Frederick last January at their Front Street home. Now... he's pleaded to third degree murder of Ms. Frederick. Although no date has been set for sentencing.... Wise could get up to 40 years at a state penitentiary.

 

Run for Diamonds

Final preparations are being made for Thursday's 102nd annual Run for the Diamonds in Berwick.  Race organizer Margaret Livsey says last year's men's winner Jon Phillips of Brooklyn is expected to be back, but women's running champ... Heidi Peoples of Scranton... isn't. Overall... Ms. Livsey says an estimated 1,800 people could participate in tomorrow's Run for the Diamonds. Berwick Borough

With the 102nd annual Run for the Diamonds scheduled for Thursday in Berwick... the borough is doing a little sprucing up. A borough spokesman says there is no parking Wednesday on Market Street... from the 300 to the 1500 block due to street sweeping. Signs are posted. On Thursday... there is no parking on Market Street starting at 8 AM. Any parked cars will be towed prior to the Run for the Diamonds.

 

Holiday Travel

Many of us will be hitting the road Wednesday to enjoy the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  As a matter of fact... the Triple – A says more than 42 – million American's will be on the road. The Triple – A's Jenny Robinson says a lot of folks come into their offices looking for road information.  The holiday period starts Wednesday and ends midnight Sunday.

 

Car / Cemetery

An 84 – year old Mifflinville woman had a wild ride through an Espy Cemetery on Tuesday. The Press – Enterprise is reporting in Wednesday's edition that Martha Seiwell had just left an auto repair shop... when for some unknown reason... she drove directly across Old Berwick Road... slamming through the fence at the New Rosemont Cemetery. Her Geo Prism ran over at least a half dozen head stones before coming to a stop. Seiwell was not injured.

 

PEMA / FEMA

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management agency says their counterpart at the federal level... FEMA... has issued close to $312 – million dollars in funding to residents effected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. It was Lee that caused millions of dollars in damage to Bloomsburg and Columbia County nearly three months ago. The total includes $69 - million dollars in U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans and $115 - million dollars in settled National Flood Insurance Program claims.

 

Obama to Visit

President Obama is coming to Scranton next Wednesday. The White House says he'll be in the Electric City to talk about the American Jobs act. That trip to Lackawanna County dealing with promoting his shovel – ready jobs programs across Northeastern Pennsylvania.

 

Mountain Top Robbery

Police in Luzerne County continue their search for a knife – wielding bandit who held up a convenience store early Tuesday morning. The robbery happened at the Good – 2 – Go store on Route 309 in Mountain Top. The man jumping over a counter and grabbing the cash in the register. If you have information about the robbery... you're asked to call Fairview Township police.

 

Drug Charges

A Shickshinny man remains in the Carbon County Jail after he was arrested over the weekend in Beaver Meadows near Hazleton. Police say 25 – year old Brian Engler, Jr. was arrested after a fight which began over counterfeit drugs. Engler is facing a host of felony and misdemeanor drug charges.  He's being held on $30,000 bail.
